Rok,
You want quite a lot and I don't think you'll find an immediate solution to all your needs. Start by breaking down your requirements into a short list and you'll find the task a lot less overwhelming. Here's a list of the requirements I dug out of your post...

  • Secure the Internet-connected PC
  • Secure the Mac
  • Set up a LAN between the PC and the MAC
  • Enable file sharing between the PC and the MAC

Start with the Internet-connected PC first. Ensure that you have a good firewall and antivirus software installed. There are free products out there, but the license for most of these requires they be used for home use only. For a firewall consider ZoneAlarm and for anti-virus try AVG or Avast! I'm sure the other peeps on here will have their own recommendations.

Jobs like this can seem huge so tackle it one step at a time. Get the PC sorted first since that's the most vulnerable asset you have. Please don't hesitate to ask more questions as you go there are plenty of peeps here willing to help.

Good luck!

Ok,then AVG and Zone alarm can save my PC.what about MAC,should I also use the same for mac also?

Securing the MAc and IBM(windows) with avg and zone alarm,is it will be ok?Am I done with enough? Now I want to set up a lan between PC and MAc and enable file sharing, but that also should be secure,so please any more suggestions,please..!!

Personally, I find sometimes that one anti-virus isn't exactly enough, Especially since one AV may pick up a file and another AV may not. Just a random site that may prove use to you if your downloading files and don't seem to sure on how malicious they are, I suggest you look into www.virustotal.com . The site has proven useful to me in the past when on my Windows box. I'm not saying it can detect everything but scanning a file with multiple AVs always gives me a safe feeling than just getting a scan result with just one Anti-virus.

That’s a good site that Kris mentioned and a lot of people I know use it. Of course the only 100% proof way of protecting yourself is not installing period, but that’s not really practical for most end users.   If you have a program that you are questioning, there are 3 ways that I like to implement as far as a security check.  First, is to run it through several AVs.  Second is if I can inspect the source code and if the program is small enough you can have some success in decompiling it.  The final is to install it on your isolated lab machine that’s has common apps like office installed and monitor it from another box inside the network. Its important to monitor it from another box not just look at it from inside the box, (think outside the box, lol) because rootkits can fool the host OS but not a separate machine on the network. You should do both actually and tripwire still has value here as far as an inside the box.   Did a port open up suddenly, etc… Now even this is not 100% perfect because a program can be coded to open on a certain event or even a future date, so hopefully inspecting the code helps to reveal this.  Of course this process is cumbersome, but what the payoff is for us is when we do catch something and it’s well done. Being able to monitor and dissect it can pay off in dividends in the end.

Is there any type of firewall between the IBM and the internet??  How do you plan to have the Mac connect to the internet..through a common router or through the IBM...I recommend an anti-virus on both systems definitely, some type of HIPS software ie. comodo firewall is my personal choice....get us a little more information.

Get an old box and throw a linux distro as a firewall. Then put an AV on each system. Theres a basic security system.
