i cant find the option to install back track 3  to my hard drive i have been told that all i have to do is select install but cant find that option on the live CD

The installer was left out in Backtrack 3 final. You need to do it manually. If you arent into doing that you can boot an older copy of Backtrack and copy the installer program ( its a small file located in /usr/share/slax/BT3.kmdr) and then place it into your Backtrack 3 live CD. You can do this while the live cd is running so no need to actually burn it.  Its a self contained program so you can stick it just about any where, including the desktop.

The instructions are the same for BT3 as they were for BT2. I've installed single and dual-boot using the same methods.

so do the instructions still apply to me if i am using a second hard drive
because i am under the assumption  that parting was making space in my old HD or am i just dumb and that means something else,because that's the part that i can't figure out

If you're dedicating an entire second/separate hard drive to running BackTrack, you have two options...

1) Follow the instructions for a single hard drive install (no partitioning required) and install BT onto your second drive (just make sure you know which is which).

1) Disconnect your first hard drive, but leave the second connected and then boot BT. Again, follow the instructions for a single drive install but this time you'll only have the 1 drive in there so there's no risk of overwriting your other data.

what do i do if my hard drive dose not come up,when i type in "mount"
this is what i get when i type in "qtparted"   ( warning: unable to open
/dev/hda/  read-only file system. /dev/hda has been opened read only)

You don't need to run qtparted, that's a dual-boot step only...

You also don't want your drive to be mounted, it needs to be u[n]mounted to do the install.

Do you know which drive is which? What happens when you run 'fdisk /dev/[drive]'?

Get a copy of VMware workstation and run it as a VMimage that way you dont have to compromise your partions and still get 100% functionaity out of BT3. I do have to mention that getting wireless devices to be detected by BT3 was an interesting challenge

Thats not bad advice, however I've seen on several occasions that running in VMware can skew some scanning results with Nmap and possibly others. Buyer beware Smiley
