Unified Threat Management (UTM) Boxes - Opinions Required

Hi Everyone,

I just searched EH.Net for a thread related to UTM boxes. However, nothing much is available.

We are planning to replace our existing entry-level firewalls (at multiple locations) with a UTM boxe that supports site-2-site VPN.

Some of the major players I found after a quick serach includes FortiNet and Juniper. Is there any other major players in the industry or any similar products?

Does any EH-Net Members have any experience with UTM boxes? The major drawback discussed with regard to UTM boxes is the throughput. When you have IDS, IPS, Anti-Spam, Anti-Virus, Conten Filtering running on a single box, a generally opinion is that speed is compromised. Is that true? Or the new-gen UTM boxes are robust enough to provide the required throughput? Let's discuss!!!!

I've always liked Astaro for the past couple of years, but one drawback to many UTM boxes is that they don't have dedicated hardware accelration for additional services.

Having this makes a difference because it addresses the throughput issue you're talking about. However that usually leads to the bigger firewall players out there that the article didn't cover. It all depends on the size of the network, throughput requirements, and scalability within the UTM.
