Heh, well not so much books for me.  I enjoy books and have a number, but for me nothing has been so helpful as Google, user manuals (for progs), and MAN pages.  All hail the MAN page.  On that note, as everyone has said before... tcp/ip and networking, Linux, and Programming experience... almost a holy trinity right there.

I wish I could find other ethical hackers in my area to chat with. I still have a lot of learning to do, and it's always good to get ideas from others. Tongue

It would be neat if there was something like this in the local community, sort of like a hacking library.

Look up your local Defcon group... quite a few area codes have them.  Usually it's DCXXX. XXX being your area code.  That's how I found mine.  We have monthly get togethers, with presentations on hacking etc.  And email networking for equipment/job offers and such.  Also, more social stuff like gaming nights and camp outs.  I'm sure if you look you can find something.  Or at least a LUG.

Cool, thanks for the Defcon suggestion...found one in my area, but there are only like 5 people in it.   Undecided

That's the problem in SA. Last time I went to a 2600/defcon meeting was about 6 years ago and it had a bunch of kids. That's not bad but they were all "How do I hack."

I've found alternate means of keeping up. One of my primary means is sitting on silc / EFNET and sitting in certain channels. You tend to pick up quite a few things and I've established a few friendships through those means.

As for reading materials. I'd recommend old phrack articles. Some of the stuff you find may not be applicable anymore but things like Fyoders TCP/IP articles are excellent in starting to understand fingerprinting beyond a command line level of running nmap and hping.

I actually posted up a book list over on LSO: It's somewhere in this thread:

How about this board which has been around since the beginning of this site:

Book Reviews

Everyone is more than welcome to post their own ideas, recommendations and reviews. This is not just for posted articles/reviews.

Hope this will help grow that board,
Don

g00d_4sh, I looked up the local defcon group here, and it seems to be a bunch of kids. That, and it seems that there are actually two groups calling themselves the same thing and they apparently fight over which one is the official/original defcon group.

Maybe I need to start my own local group. Tongue
