Hi all,

I am pretty new here so wanted to do little post about me and maybe get some feedback from you.

I am curently doing a degree in Information Technology but I have always been intrested in Security and have been for many years trying to get more into Security with little or no sucess.

Since finding this site I fill I am slowily progressing, at the moment I cant really do any security Exams becasue or uni work but plan after my Degree to do the C|EH.

I think this is the best place to start but in the mean time I am doing a lot of research into EH and finding tools of the trade so to speak. I have got an old laptop what I plan to connect to my wirless network, so I can mess about with running port scans on it and just general messing about with software I have heard about.

I just really wanted any advice, am I heading in right direction or should I be taking another approach ?

is the C|EH best place to start?

Thanks in advance Wink

Hello and Welcome  Smiley

ethicalhacker.net is a excelent resource and there are some great guys here, so don't be shy in asking questions. You're on the right track when you say you are planning on doing some experimentation, the best way to learn is to have a go and see what happens.

Getting on the in world of information security requires doing a lot of learning and gaining some relevent experience. It doesn't have to be directly in infosec, cut your teeth on some PC support or unix/linux admin and you'll start gaining useful skills.

I'd personally go for experience over certifications. There's a lot of threads here about CEH specifically, so do a search and see what others have to say about it.

Hey there,

Welcome to the EH net. If you are new to Info Sec, I would suggest that you get a firm grip on TCP/IP and networking fundamentals even before you get into certification. A good six months or a year experience in basic PC support can be very useful. I think as far as the first cert, look into getting Security+, it is a good place to start and covers wide range of topics. CEH is good, but it is very tool heavy.

Hope this helps

PS - Don - I did not disappear Smiley I was busy with my CISA which is over finally, now the wait begins Smiley

Hey MillWall Welcome abroad!

Here is a post to some real good Wireshark training posted by Manu Zacharia. http://www.ethicalhacker.net/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,54/topic,2185.msg9196/#msg9196

I would highly recommend watching all the presentations listed in his post as they are easy to follow and can be downloaded for later viewing. The
Man-in-the-Middle ARP Interceptions one was awesome and I recommend every here to look at that one as it is similar to what I presented at Chicagocon a few months back. Anyway you are in the right place to learn just make sure to search the forums before asking questions as many questions have been answered in the past threads.

Regards,

Brian

Just look through all the articles and whatnot on the forum.  It is actually rather amazing how much stuff is there for the taking if you take the time to dig.  Most questions have been answered at least a few times, I know I've learned a good bit from watching the videos, and reading through the varied responses and looking at the linked pages.  Welcome to the community, and enjoy your stay.
