Hackers in the House
New social network for hackers lets white hats share and job-hunt
MAY 5, 2008 | 5:15 PM
By Kelly Jackson Higgins
Senior Editor, Dark Reading
First it was MySpace for the teens, then Facebook for the college set, and then LinkedIn for the business professionals -- and now there’s a social network just for hackers.
The House of Hackers social network was created and launched by researchers from GNUCitizen. "The House of Hackers community is established to support the hacker culture, mindset, way of life, ideologies, political views, vision, etc.," wrote researcher Petko Petkov on the GNUCitizen blog today.
Petkov said in the blog that House of Hackers members will be able to exchange ideas, create groups, tiger teams, and “elite circles,” collaborate on projects, and also “participate in the independent, recruitment market.”
...HD Moore, director of security research for BreakingPoint Systems, says his initial take on the House of Hackers announcement in the blog post is that the recruitment aspect of the House of Hackers could lure the wrong crowd. “If anything, hackers who work in security do all they can to appear professional and trustworthy and that really seems to undermine it,” Moore says. It could end up attracting "'employers'" who aren't interested in the legality of the work they sponsor, he says.

Awwww... I'm blishing.
In all seriousness, thanks for the compliment. It really means a lot. And I think
all of us
do a great job of keeping EH-Net a very professional place to hang out.
I'll keep doing my best,
Don

Hmm, yeah.. not too sure how I feel about that site. At first glance, I'd agree with what HD Moore pointed out. It doesn't strike me as a very "professional" type community. Looks more like the exact site we wouldn't want EH-Net to become.

Yes, I think Eh-net is unique. I haven't found a site that equals it. You xan actually ask a question here and not get totally flamed!

I'll agree with the general consensus so far, I've found EH-Net to be a great source of information and debate (cheers Don, keep blushin').
I did take a look at HoH and it may have some potential if the top bloke (Petko Petkov, I think) can manage to keep in on track, however only time will tell if it manages to stay legal/professional/ethical for long or if it will attract any knowledgable top contributors.
As for why we need anything else with EH-Net around, if the only place you look for information is EH-Net then you may find yourself falling behind as no single resource can cover every topic to full depth, especially in such a diverse and rapidly evolving field. It never hurts to have a seperate source of information (or to keep an eye of the
'bad guys'
if the site goes that way).

Haha, yeah, that's one of the first things I thought of when I was looking at the HoH site... "this may be a good resource to watch over depending on who it attracts and who shares information..."

Very valid arguement, however, I'm pretty leary of having my name associated with the site...at least until we see what role it ends up playing. I had a current and a potential employer both grill me about my dealings on
THIS
site...and it clearly states "Ethical" in the name! Google be damned!

Interesting, I would have thought that active participation in the security community (of any form) would have been a plus for potential employers. It's got to be an advantage over someone who took a bootcamp two use ago and hasn't updated their skills/knowledge-set since.
Any one else had similar issues? (or should I hide my online dealings behind aliases and ToR
)

I think that it mainly had to do with the fact that the people who questioned me were idiots
The terms "Hacker" and "Hacking" still have such a negative connotation in the world. These were even IT people, not HR drones, but had never even bothered to check out the site, just saw that it came up when they looked me up and the alarm bells went off.
Whatever...kept the original job, and got the new one anyway.

I have to agree this has been a wonderful site, I've been trolling this site for several months and glad this site hasn't turned into a scriptkiddy kind of place.
