Hi all,

making the move into security after 15 years of UNIX admin.

I went to purchase the CEhv6 from the following link
http://www.eccouncil.org/studyguide.htm

I've just received an email stating that I have to purchase the "European" market version, noting that the price goes up from £350 to £507! plus an additional £50 postage.

Can anyone tell me the reasoning behind this, do they not have an Headquarters based over here in Europe?

It's quite maddening that they initally took my order in the first place only to cancel.

miffed,

Alan.

If you haven't already paid, or are curious to see if you can get it cheaper, I would send an email to info@eccouncil.org and see who your local/nearest distributor is. That may bring the price down, I'm not sure.

No, there is no headquarters there that I'm aware of there... just in the US and Malaysia.

Hi Bill,

thanks for the prompt reply, I've already emailed them to ask why there is such a price difference, I'll update if they get back to me.

This is the web page they directed me to with the current prices.
http://eccouncil.org/orders.htm

As you can see for some reason the USA is considerably cheaper.
I was also informed that I need to add the exam voucher, another £178!

Maybe I should consider studying another area of security, or are they all this expensive?

cheers,

Alan.

The only thing I can think of is the shipping cost and that there is no local distributor. I'm not quite sure exactly how many books are included in v6, but there were 3 plus a lab manual in v5 (making it quite heavy). Update when you receive a reply.

Not sure how helpful this is but I'll post anyway.
You can still take the V5 C|EH exam if you're strapped for cash, you can find study guides/books on Amazon for a fraction of the price for official courseware from EC Council, for example 3 books for $85.93 http://www.amazon.com/Certified-Ethical-Hacker-Exam-Publishing/dp/0789735318/ref=sr_1_2/188-4411279-0787436?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1226692777&sr=1-2#productPromotions

You have around 7 months to take the V5 exam:
"The CEHv6 exam is currently in beta and will be available on the 5th November, 2008. The CEH v5 exam will be available until June 3rd, 2009 then retired."

Those 3 books are each excellent resources as well. The Official guide and the Prep Guide are both targeted at v5 while the ExamPrep book is for v4 (but still a great resource for v5).

 Thanks for that Data_Raid,
something to ponder over the weekend.
I could stretch my budget at a push, but I'm just taken aback by the large price difference.

I'll update when I get a reply from the eccouncil.

thanks for time.
