If you had to have your ultimate software utility, what would it be? ( you may just get your wish! )

You don't need windows to run windows apps. Wine, a windows compatibilty layer  for linux, is a handy alternative. Some distros can run more programs under wine than others.Anyway, download it at http://www.winehq.org.

I tried that the first time I ever ran Linux.

Check the AppDB on WineHQ for Cain&Abel... You will see that it is "garbage". WinPCap won't install, do you don't get the sniffing and ARP poisoning capabilities of Cain&Abel.

So, I still say the best software package, in my opinion, would be Cain&Abel for Linux.

I know that there are tools for Linux that do everything Cain&Abel can.

I just think it is well organized.

Like the MySpace man-in-the-middle attack. I could use a program to do ARP poisoning, and Wireshark to sniff the packets, but Cain&Abel does both, and you don't have to look at packets individually to find the data.

well if it is a standard system utility that will be "grep" or "xargs" in Linux/Unix.
If you meant a security tool then that would be either netcat, or one of its derivatives "cryptocat, socat, linkcat,.etc"

Now for C&A I love the tool, <paranoia> however it is not open source, and i am wondering if enough security auditing is done on the tool itself, that is the tool can be used as a sniffer, and password cracker. that's a lot of parsing, and possibilities of buffer overflows. it is usually run as an admin, so any vurnability on it while using it could be disastrous </end paranoia>

I guess i will let it pass and chose metasploit for a security frame work.
for a security distro it will be BackTack, well i do consider it a utility  Wink
