my pc

i have a 733mhz p3 system, with 192mb of 750mhz rdram and a 8.45 gig hard drive. Right now i am downloading xubuntu to install on it. oh yeah, thatt's a 1mbps adsl connection i am operating on now. the os is 688mb and is gonna take about 100min to download. only 6% left now and i'm getting nervous, hoping it's going to make it all the way.

THERE WILL BE NO CRITICIZING OF MY CHOICE OF HARDWARE.
1 it's cheap,
2 i don't really have anything to lose if something goes wrong,
3 i want to prove that linux can make the best use out of even ancient hardware.

Before you go ahead and install the latest distro, you may find an older distro will be more appropriate.
For the sort of hardware you are talking about, I would go for something like Suse 5.3, Redhat 5.2, Slackware 3.6 or Debian 2.0, all circa '98. It might suit your hardware a little better.

check the following URL http://www.linux.com/feature/52134, and do some research your self, most likely you will be able to install a 2.6 kernel on this machine, you might need to recompile the kernel to get rid of most of the unwanted functionality and make it optimized for your machine, Debian would work nicely, no need to go exterme and install a very old distro, if you have time, plenty of time and you want to learn more about building a distro, and the decisions involved check http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/. shawal, you are correct, of course. The latest kernel source will probably compile for the older hardware. You must be aware that some functionality is removed from newer kernels that may be useful for older hardware.
I suggested an older distro as the HDD and memory requirements tend to be smaller with the older distros, esp. when it comes to things like X!
I've looked at the LFS documentation, it doesn't appear to be a fun thing to do! Since I cut my teeth on the 31 floppy install of Slackware 1, I think I'll give it a miss.

I also suspect that xubuntu would not be one of the best distros to use to learn about Linux distros, less so on a workstation with 192MB ram but since I've not used it, I can't say for sure.

all right. i'll also let you know that this is rdram at 750 mhz it is on par with today's high-end ram. It also has an nVidia GeForce 2 graphics card with 64mb graphic ram, so the graphics load is off the cpu, allowing for better performance. Xubuntu is different from Ubuntu in that it uses Xfce as the WM, instead of power-hungry Gnome.
