I used Helix a couple months back at work, for some forensics work I was required to do by my boss.  That is a really fun little distro.

I have tried slax, nimblex, and mandriva but i have never really been able to get my hands on knoppix.

If you find a Linux User Group in your area they usually give distros away like candy at a parade.  Knoppix is popular so you could probably get one that way if you were willing to do a little digging.  It is usually a great place to get good technical information about Linux.

it happens that mandriva and puppy linux can read\write\delete to windows storage devices.
