The Last HOPE
July 18-20, 2008
The Hotel Pennsylvania
New York City

Hackers on Planet Earth, or HOPE, is a conference series sponsored by 2600: The Hacker Quarterly. Their web site right now simply states:

Quote

All good things...

http://www.hope.net

Please share your thoughts on past events and if you plan on attending this one. As for this one being the last, we don't know. The title makes one believe that is the case. Wikipedia is never an absolute authority, but they state this:

Quote
The Last HOPE
Planned for July, 18-20 2008 at Hotel Pennsylvania

The next H.O.P.E. conference is currently in the planning stages. A notable change from past years is 2600's use of an Internet forum to facilitate community participation in the planning of the event.

It is unclear at this time if the name refers to the end of all HOPE conferences, the end of the hope that the Hotel will be saved, or something else entirely.

supposedly they are tearing down the hotel  that they have it in, so being typical new yorkers, instead of finding another hotel they are just going to whine and cry and not have the con anymore.

that being said, i am going to try to go in case it is the last one.  kind of like being able to say i was part of the first LSO/EH.net tweener party :-)

I did hear it through the grapevine that the hotel gave them such a great deal that it made the con possible. Moving to another venue would make it too expensive to justify.

Maybe I'll try to get a little clarification on this.

Cool press release about the event:

Hackers Track Visitors to New York City

New York, NY - May 15, 2008 - This summer, hackers from around the world will track the movements of thousands of visitors to New York City.

As part of a social experiment, attendees at a hacker conference in July will be issued badges with electronic tracking devices.  Large displays will show in real-time where people go, with whom they associate, for how long and how often.

The tracking technology, known as RFID, is fast becoming an unseen part of everyday life.  This July, for the very first time, the general public will be able to participate in the transparent operation of a major RFID tracking program.

Conference attendees will participate in games built around the tracking system.  Players will seek ways to protect their privacy, find vulnerabilities in the tracking system, employ data mining techniques to learn more about other participants, and choose how much personal information they will disclose in order to play.

This demonstration will be open to the public at The Last HOPE conference from July 18-20 at the Hotel Pennsylvania in New York City. The first 1500 preregistrants will be guaranteed an RFID badge enabling them to participate in the game.  More information and preregistration is available at http://www.hope.net/.

Anyone going?

EH-Net is sponsoring The Last HOPE. If you're going, look for RichM who will covering the event all 3 days. Also in attendance will be one of the ChicagoCon 2008f keynoters, Greg Conti, author of Security Data Visualization.

Keep an eye out for the ChicagoCon Banner in the vendor area. Be sure to help spread the word about our week-long event starting Oct 27.

Have fun,
