DEFCON 16
August 8-10, 2008
Riviera Hotel and Casino
Las Vegas, Nevada

Simply put... It's the largest underground hacking convention in the world!

Last year EH-Net sponsored a tweener party between Black Hat and DEFCON. I don't see any reason why this won't happen again this year!!  Cool

I will be there.  Hopefully other EH-net members will be able to make it.

Well.. I may and I may not.  I have a question regarding it first.  Defcon... never been, is it free... or at least reasonably priced?  Or is it gouging like BlackHat?  I looked at the BlackHat prices... and I'm honestly not currently making enough to survive that sort of pain.

Defcon is normally around $100 cash to get in.  I will try to make it again this year...

Thanks for the quick reply.  If it's just $100, or around that it shouldn't be a problem.  I am not going to be dropping 6k or whatever though.  On that same note, anyone carpooling from the Seattle area? Tongue

Meh... I could fly, but I'd prefer to find a group going from Seattle.  Save a little money and do some social networking.  Unfortunately the UW Greyhat group seems pretty dead, their site hasn't been updated in years or I would ask them.

I have my tickets and room. I'll be at BH on Wed and Thurs and DefCon Fri & partially Sat. Unfortunately, I have to fly back home on Sat evening.

I do have the Hofbräuhaus Las Vegas booked for about 50 people, but they can't guarantee that they will open the Beer Garden. I'd hate to have it like last year where we were in the main room with the German band and yelling partons. No one could talk at all.

I'll keep you posted, but for now, the Thursday evening between BH and DefCon will be the EH-Net party. I'll start a new thread with the details.

Hiya Guys,

Where do people stay at this event and how much is a room per night all in?
Also is it a daily cost to get into Defcon, or a one off fee?
Also how much do you normally need to spend per day, food, drink etc?

I am trying to get an idea how much this event would cost for me to attend from the UK. It will probably be to much but I wont know unless I have a look at working it out.

Thanks in advance.

DefCon is $100 flat. That gets you in all days of the event.

It's at the Riviera. Circus Circus is across the street. There are plenty of other places to stay. Daily room rates vary greatly from place to place and day to day. The only thing I can tell you is to hit a few web sites to figure that out. Don't be shocked to pay anywhere from $200 - 500 per night. That's why it's great to go with friends to share the cost.

Maybe you can use EH-Net to find a roomy.

Daily cost for other stuff is up to you. Do you gamble? Do you rent a car or prefer a taxi? Do you want a couple nights out with a fancy meal and drinks or just hit up the McDonald's across the street every night?

Sorry to be vague, but hope it helps nonetheless.

Dale,
Go to the Defcon site and it will answer some of your questions. I find staying off the strip will save you some big money. Most places have shuttle service to the strip so its no problem.  One good thing is Defcon is held off season in Vegas and this year I have noticed hotels are getting aggressive because tourism is way off. Orleans casino  just sent me an email that they are doing a $38.00 a night specials! So shop around.

Thanks for the information guys, I have just done some searching and its looking to be just under $2000 just for the flights and room, so I think its going to be to much, really need to plan for these things.

Thanks again for sharing the info, and have a great time.

 Cry

Looks like I'm going to have to cancel now.  I just converted from being a contractor to a full-time employee...to keep my position, I needed to do so, but it meant a HEFTY pay cut (supposedly made up for in benefits).  I also don't get to use any personal or vacation time for 90 days.

My wife has convinced me that it would be in the best interest of our bank account if I put it off again.  I'm going to start putting away a little cash each paycheck so this doesn't happen again.

Have fun guys, and keep an eye out on the Riviera's site, as my room will become available shortly.  Sad
