Supposedly filming was done last summer and a release date for 2006 is to be announced. None of the old cast is reported to be in it, but we'll keep an eye out for cameos (although highly unlikely). Here's a quick overview of the story:

On a class trip to Europe Cory Carpenter, a teenage computer whiz, goes on the lam from the authorities, who have mistakenly pegged him as a cyber terrorist. While the technological infrastructure of the entire civilized world is apparently melting down, Cory, his beautiful classmate Anne Deville, and his nerdy best buddy Dale Darrow, manage to stay one step ahead of the authorities. However, Cory is later horrified to learn that his long time internet pal, Jay Forrell, is actually a government computer that has run amok and is about to hail nuclear disaster down on an unsuspecting planet.

Not much is out there as to who is in it or any other details for that matter. Hey, at least we have a title.

I have some updated information on WarGames 2. Apparently, the original title has changed to WarGames 2: The Dead Code. Movie production began in November of 2006 in Montreal and it appears that the movie will be headed straight to DVD or television.

Quote
Matt Lanter (”Heroes”) will star in the sequel to the 1983 film starring Matthew Broderick “War Games 2 — The Dead Code,” Stuart Gillard directs from a script by Randall M. Badat. Lanter plays computer hacker Will Farmer, whose world gets turned upside after playing an online terrorist-attack simulator game against a government super-computer designed to profile potential terrorists. All hell breaks loose when Homeland Security is convinced that he’s a terrorist intent on disrupting the fabric of society. Production starts November 20 in Montreal.

I was looking forward to this, but not so much anymore. Because I'm a sucker for these kinds of movies, I'll probably watch it anyway. See the trailer here:

As mentioned earlier, this is going straight to DVD and will be released in July.

Should I be worried that I enjoyed the trailer? Looks like it'll be good for some thought-free fun...

I agree 110% with you. I was just hoping that it might be an inspiration for a new generation of techies like the first one was for me.

Still might, I'm the product of watching hackers too many times as a kid.

I think those young enough to find films like these give them inspiration will fall into two catagories:
  • those that a hit with the bug
  • and those that get bored 5 minutes after finding out that GOD isn't the password to every system the try Wink

In general it may not hurt to promote security / insecurity awareness within a wider audience, even if it does need to be wrapped up in Hollywoodisms
