This should be a fun two part series on Nmap by someone who uses it on a regular basis. Welcome to the EH-Net Writers' Corps.

[Article]-Nmap from an Ethical Hacker`s View Part 1
Quote
Article by Kirby Tucker
Editor's Note:
Kirby is a long time contributor and supporter of EH-Net. So when he came to me with the idea to do a more approachable tutorial series on Nmap, it was a no brainer. Be sure to share your thoughts on this article and Nmap in general in the forum discussion.
What, another Nmap tutorial? Yes that's true, but I am hoping to approach it a little differently than what I have seen available. I want to describe Nmap from the viewpoint of a hacker and at the same time give a clear, step-by-step method of attaining a good level of proficiency. After completing this 2 Part Series and having practiced the techniques described, one should not only be able to sit at a "roundtable" discussion with advanced security professionals and "hold their own" in a discussion concerning Nmap, but also utilize this great tool in their own network.
Be sure to share your thoughts and make suggestions,
Don

Very detailed, well thought out.
I have to admit, I didn't know that the gentleman that created, "Crime and Punishment" first name was Fyodor
Looking forward to part 2! Thanks again

SlashDot is how I found this place and
it looks like a great place for anybody looking
into C|EH. Seen some videos on Nmap used in
conjunction with Metasploit and this is a good write up
on Nmap.
Keep up the good work.

its a shame that there are only like 2 decent posts in that whole slashdot thread.
i think we should propose a new internet rule that to flame someone you dont personally know, you should have to give links to your papers, work, research, that shows why your opinion is worth the flame.
overlooking that the anonyminity (sp) that the net provides.. most people into security that are trying to constantly show how cool they are should remember that the rest of the 99.8% of the world could give two shits about anything we as a group find "cool" or worthwhile and remember that we are all a bunch on nerds.
might put things into perspective... spend that time flaming someone to just go learn something new

Where has the article gone?
I found the link from slashdot and started reading it last night. I bookmarked the page. Today I get "You are not authorised to view this resource" at
http://www.ethicalhacker.net/content/view/155/1/

Sorry about that Walt and anyone else looking for the Nmap article. We have an issue with the content and decided to pull the article until we can get it all squared away. This should be temporary as all parties involved have the education of the security community as their top priority.
On the bright side, every article on EH-Net remains free and open to all visitors.
Thanks for being patient,
Don

Nope, cache has been updated to the new page.
I thought of the same thing before I posted earlier.

Me too.
The page said I had to register to view the article. When I registered it said I wasn't authorized. Now I suppose I'll be receiving spam from
noreply@ehticalhacker.net
for the rest of my life and I didn't even get to read the article...

I understand your concerns. Please feel free to delete your account. We had no intention of duping anyone into becoming a member. As mentioned in the post, we do apologize greatly as this was completely an unforeseen incident and all other content is absolutely free.
As for the messages we send to members, I wouldn't even call it spam. The members get at the most 2 emails a month to announce new articles, contests, etc. and that's about it. Feel free to PM me or any other member and ask how much email they have received from EH-Net.
Personally, I can't stand it when you sign up for something and they send you multiple messages daily. One every now and then is cool by me, so we live by the golden rule here at EH-Net.
Thanks for your understanding,
Don
