well day by day it seems that internet security is getting tighter.Few years back we can easily get ip.host names withe use of cmd in windows, but nowdays its just noway. I just want to ask is there any way nowdays available for getting ip over global network??

Rok,

I don't want to sound rude as I could be missing something (been working for last 28hrs straight Sad ) but isn't IP over a global network called the internet? Can you elaborate further as I'm sure I must be missing something obvious...

Well, global network could be said to be a companies VPN spanning multiple countries etc... but I don't know if that's what he ment.  Interesting thread btw... perhaps I'll write down my MAC.  Tongue  Probably not, but perhaps.

The fingerprinting concept is intriguing, but not applicable here, the figurative needle in a haystack. This technique is only viable if you can ensure a connection. I suppose a "call home" program could do this, but there's some many other ways of determining identity that don't require fingerprinting if you have access to install a phone home program.

I had my laptop stolen, and I almost recovered it, but not by my own sleuth work. The cops don't give a shit about your laptop, that's for sure. The funny thing about it, was that I had a bios level finger print reader with reciprocated encryption between the bios and harddrive. So basically, it was a 3K brick for the junkie who stole it.

Either way, if you're trying to pinpoint an IP without paying LoJack or something like that, you can always set a gmail notifier or desktop to start on computer start and save the username and pwd. Gmail gives you a log of recent activity at the bottom of their webmail interface, detailing the type of access and the IP location. You'll still have to provide the police with the IP, but it's a start. I'd also suggest a webcam monitoring service running in the bg and sending snapshots etc.

No it is not possible to trace someone MAC/physical address because its only work within particular subnet. And As the subnet changes the router table changes the destination ip = next MAC address.. Smiley

I have previously seen some javascript that would pull the mac address, but you would have to get the user to browse to your website and it would have to be a windows machine browsing with IE.

Don't know about tracking them down, but here's a little ditty that may be what you're looking for... and best of all its Open Source and FREE!

http://preyproject.com/

Description

Prey helps you find your stolen laptop by sending timed reports to your email with a bunch of information of its whereabouts. This includes the general status of the computer, a list of running programs and active connections, fully-detailed network and wifi information, a screenshot of the running desktop and — in case your laptop has an integrated webcam — a picture of the thief.

Prey can use a web URL to check if it should generate and send the report, so you have a way of alerting remotely the program whenever your laptop disappears. It can (and should) be run as root so it doesn’t depend on an active user session to run, but only on a succesful boot.
