I am looking for the best network scan tool taking an inventory of all devices attached to the network, as part of discovery, establishing a baseline.

Something I can just plug in the wall and run.  Without entering IP ranges, or specifying ports etc.

I just saw the post for SpiceWorks and that looks to be just what I need.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Spiceworks will give you an inventory but as far as a base line you might want to look to GFI LANGuard. GFI has a free trail version (32 Private IP's) but you will still need to know the range of IP's top scan and GFI will only scan a private ranges so this will make sure you are not scanning random internet hosts. another option is xscan 3.3 but this program might be hard to find on the net now.
