Finally a study guide for the CHFI (Exam 312-49). This book is to be release in July 13, 2007. I'm really a fan of study guides and books on security certification as oppose to bootcamps which is more expensive. I'm always happy to see when a study guide is published because this is the route I usually take for earning my certs.

Quote
Book Description
This is the official CHFI study guide for professionals studying for the forensics exams and for professionals needing the skills to identify an intruder's footprints and to properly gather the necessary evidence to prosecute.

The EC-Council offers certification for ethical hacking and computer forensics. Their ethical hacker exam has become very popular as an industry gauge and we expect the forensics exam to follow suit.

The material is presented in a logical learning sequence: a section builds upon previous sections and a chapter on previous chapters. All concepts, simple and complex, are defined and explained when they appear for the first time. This book includes the following special chapter elements: Exam objectives covered in a chapter are clearly explained in the beginning of the chapter, Notes and Alerts highlight the crucial points, Exams Eye View section at the end of each chapter emphasizes the important points from the exams perspective, Key Terms present the definitions of key terms used in the chapter, Review Questions section at the end of each chapter that contains the questions modeled after the real exam questions based on the material covered in the chapter. The answers to these questions are presented with explanations in an appendix. Also included is a full practice exam modeled after the real exam. The answers to the exam questions are presented with full explanations.

* The only study guide for CHFI, provides 100% coverage of all exam objectives.
* Full web-based practice exam with explanations of correct and incorrect answers
* Forensics xxxxx

I sure hope that covers the new objectives just released May 1 for version 3...

It doesn't have the EC-Council or the official C|HFI logo on it either.. so it leaves me a little bit skeptical.

I was thinking about... I don't mean to be attacking the book or anything (in comparison, the ExamPrep CEH book is a great reference for the CEH exam) I think I just was thrown off by 'Official CHFI' in the title. It sounds like it'll be a good reference and the author seems to have a lot of experience (though it doesn't list CHFI with his certifications).

I'm wondering if Syngress scrapped this book, or is delaying it. I'm not able to find any reference to it on the Syngress website at all. I thought the courseware for CHFI v3 would be out by now, but that seems to be a bit delayed as well.

Looking at this site, the contents list looks to compare to the v2 objectives, which would make this review guide somewhat obsolete pretty quick if v3 is just about to be launched. I think Amazon had the release date set for today, July 13th.

Anyone else heard anything about this book?

I was searching on the web and found several sites indicating that the book publisher is  Elsevier Science Ltd, for example check the following links:

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?dest=9999999997&product_id=5945557&sourceid=0100000030660805302498
http://www.magersandquinn.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1462173&isbn_id=3749371

However, I checked out Elsevier site and it says that the book imprint is Syngress. Not sure if the term imprint is the same as publisher.

Cool, thanks for the heads up.

It looks like Amazon just changed it from "pre-order" to "order, but doesn't ship until July 30 - Aug 8"

I'll keep checking on it, or hopefully it will show up in my books24x7 library.

Hmm, this book is very shady. Aside from the strange publisher thing we've come across, have you looked at the 'enlarged' image of the book cover?

"Guaranteed Coverage of All Exam Objectives: If the topic is listed in the CHFI.org exam objectives, it is covered here"

"Expert Guidance from Specialists: The CHFI Study Guide is written by a subject matter expert and officially endorsed by CHFI.org"

CHFI.org seems to be registered to the same people that own CHFI.com, a Toronto, Canada based radio station.

Very strange...

Alright, I checked with the EC-Council President. He stated "Yes, this is the latest endorsed book." Guess that answers it Smiley

I noticed they finally updated this book on their website. The new release date is Aug. 30. I'd imagine that it will cover v3 objectives as well since they've pushed it back to better correlate with the release of the v3 courseware.
