Thanks, oasis_inin

As far as studying, I would highly recommend reading the courseware and either the Exam Prep 2 book (v4 review guide) or the new Sybex Review Guide (v5 review guide I think, but I've not seen/read it). In addition to that, I would recommend using the tips and advice already posted throughout this forum as well as creating some form of lab (virtual recommended) to become familiar with all of the tools.

Best of luck Smiley

Hey Brian,

Thanks man!

I'm planning on following up fairly quick with the ENSA, ECSA, and Security+. I'd like to have all 3 by the end of March. I've already read through the majority of the ENSA material, and I've read through my Security+ book a couple times, as well as already created a study guide. So for the most part I'm pretty prepared and I'm hoping to meet my goal Smiley

Hi venom77..

Thanks for the advice bro.

One question though, do we need to pay attention on all the listed tools (a lot are there) or is there any list of important ones that can be summarised for nailing the exam. Or do we just need to know/memorize them by name and their respective funtions/purposes.

Please advice.

Yes, there are definitely a lot of tools listed. There's a good handful listed within the courseware itself that go a bit more in depth than others. I would pay attention to those and know them inside-out. I would also make sure to go through the lab manual and get to know most of the tools listed there as well.

What you should do is write down all of the tools from the study guides with a simple explanation of what they do. A couple of words will do. Know them on the surface. That way if you get a question like: Which of the following are not PW Crackers? You would pick Ethereal. Or another example would be: L0phtcrack is what type of tool? You would select password cracker. 99% of the tools on the exam are tested in this way. Of course that means that of the 300 or more tools mentioned in the courseware, only 3 or so are questioned in detail.

So the 3 tools that I would learn in depth (including command line switches) are:

Nmap
Netcat
Snort (to a lesser extent)

You will be asked questions about specific switches for Netcat and Nmap. Not so much for Snort, but most exams contain at least a few questions that ask you to look at a Snort log and tell which attack is happening. This is not to say that you won't get asked more specific questions on specific tools, but if you spend mroe time on those 3, you will be better prepared for the exam. NOTE: Although the exam is tool heavy, don't just study tools. It covers much more.

For those of you who have already passed the exam, would you agree with this assessment?

Hope this helps,
Don

I would agree with what Don has said. Definitely pay attention to those tools listed. In addition, I would become familiar with ettercap switches also. Adding to 'the exam is more than just tools', you definitely need to read through the courseware (or a review guide at the very least).
