DEFCON 15
August 3 - 5, 2007
Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas

Simply put, this is the largest underground hacking event in the world. Here's an excerpt freom their FAQ:

Quote
What is DEFCON?
DEFCON is one of the oldest continuous running hacker conventions around, and also one of the largest.

How did DEFCON start?
Originally started in 1993, it was a meant to be a part for member of "Platinum Net", a Fido protocol based hacking network out of Canada. As the main U.S. hub I was helping the Platinum Net organizer (I forget his name) plan a closing party for all the member BBS systems and their users. He was going to shut down the network when his dad took a new job and had to move away. We talking about where we might hold it, when all of a sudden he left early and disappeared. I was just planning a party for a network that was shut down, except for my U.S. nodes. I decided what the hell, I'll invite the members of all the other networks my BBS (A Dark Tangent System) system was a part of including Cyber Crime International (CCI), Hit Net, Tired of Protection (ToP), and like 8 others I can't remember. Why not invite everyone on #hack? Good idea!

Where did the name come from?
The short answer is a combination of places. There as a SummerCon in the summer, a HoHoCon in the winter, a PumpCon during Halloween, etc. I didn't want any association with a time of year. If you are a Phreak, or just use your phone a lot you'll notes "DEF" is #3 on the phone. If you are into military lingo DEFCON is short for "Defense Condition." Now being a fan of the movie War Games I took note that the main character, David Ligntman, lived in Seattle, as I do, and chose to nuke Las Vegas with W.O.P.R. when given the chance. Well I knew I was doing a con in Vegas, so it all just sort of worked out.

Just remember, DEFCON is what you make of it.

If anyone is planning to attend this year, make a post. I think I might try. Its a little way off still, but it can sneak up on you before you know it and then its too late!

I might see if I can make it... All depends on my work schedule.

That would be cool. Maybe if we had a few others from the forum attend we could get together and represent EH-net, lol!

Wow. Now I'm being pulled out of the woodwork. Let's just say that I am working on getting press passes for both DEFCON and Black Hat, since they are back-to-back in Vegas. We'll see!

Boy... how's that for not making a commitment?  Lips sealed

Hey guys!  I'm definitely interested in going to Defcon this year. That is if I can get the time off work and if the hotel isn't too expensive. It'd be great to finally meet you guys too!  Cool

its probably because you have to be at least 18 to rent a room.  i dont think you have to be 18 to get a ticket.  i'm old though, so i dont look to close at that kind of stuff.

i'll be going this year too.

p0et, booking the hotel early is the key to getting  a good rate.  the defcon rate if you stay at the riveria isnt too bad.

Defcon is sporting a new Tesla-themed site. I'm a big Tesla fan, so kudos.

Don, I think you should set up a EH-net dinner or lunch or beer call during con time.

would be fun to meet all the EH-net people that are coming.

Gates,

How much time are you going to get to spend at the Con when you're planning all these beer calls?   Grin

I gotta be stuck in a boot camp that week instead of hanging out in Vegas with all the other geeks and nerds.  Next year!
