With hardware requirements as low as a 486 with 32MB of Ram and a 512MB HDD, anyone can start playing with their very own firewall using SmoothWall Express.

Another similar option is IPCop, which was actually forked from Smoothwall a few years back. I've used it for several years and am generally happy with it.
