1  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Network Pen Testing / Backtrack 3 Install on: November 17, 2008, 09:06:39 PM
I recently purchased an ASUS Eee laptop with a 16 GB solid state drive.  I would like to put Backtrack 3 on it as the primary OS.  I have created a Backtrack bootable USB drive and it runs perfectly on the laptop.

The laptop does not have a CD drive because of its size, so I would like to install Backtrack with a USB drive.  Does anyone know how to install Backtrack from a Backtrack bootable USB drive?  Or possibly an easy way to create a boot drive that will install Backtrack onto the hard drive of my laptop?

Thanks,
2  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Certification / Re: CompTIA A+ vs. * on: August 08, 2008, 05:13:06 AM
I've recently taken a Sys Admin job.  I was fortunate enough to go through 5 interviews and receive 3 job offers within the last 6 months.  While most of the job descriptions were nearly the same, the different companies I interviewed with all highlighted different portions of my resume.

At least two of the companies were impressed with my HDI cert (which is very easy to pass with a little bit of study).  A program manager actually compared the HDI Support Center Analyst cert with his PMP cert (I think he was a little off, but I appreciated the compliment).

Another company was very inquisitive of my MCTS: Vista Configuring cert, but had nothing to say about my Windows Server 2K3 70-290, even though the position was a Windows Sys Admin.

As for someone wanting to break into IT, I'd start with the A+.  No matter what field of IT you go into, the A+ puts down a solid foundation.  From there I'd look into a soft skills cert from HDI.  A lot of companies are looking for someone with people skills, not just PC skills.

Oddly enough, out of 5 interviews, only one interviewer mentioned my A.S. degree...does anyone find that a little strange?

I took this training course about a year ago.  It's not a certification, but it is affordable and informative.

It is also around $150.  HDI provides top notch soft skill training.

One of the most interesting shows I've seen in a long time.  Any chance they'll make more?

Check out SANS.  They have top notch training courses, and very respected Certs.  They also have a few geared towards the legal end.

Another piece of legislation from politicians who really don't know what's going on.

I have MS 3.1 and Ruby loaded on Vista Home Premium. Metasploit works perfectly.

If I am reading your post correctly, Metasploit became non-functional after the Ruby install?

Right.  The document could be opened, but not modified.  Good suggestions Bogwitch.

you mean  you still did not have the password, however you were able to convert it and make it unsecure? that would be a bug wouldn't it?

Surely you aren't suggesting that there are bugs in Microsoft products? Smiley

Thanks for your suggestions guys.  I was under the gun to get this document ready for adjustments ASAP.

The fix was pretty easy...after I tried 1,2,3,4,5 and qwerty...(thanks Rance), I saved the document to html.  From there, the password restrictions were lifted and I was able to copy and paste it into a new document.

Does anyone have a suggestion on what method would be best to crack a password protected MS Word document?

The boss/owner of a company I work for put "Out of Order.  Do Not Use" signs on all of the bathroom doors.

People were walking from one department to the next trying to find an open bathroom.

are you able to tell us which application? Was it mainstream or in-house?

Just trying to get a better feel for the bigger picture, thanks in advance.

It is a commercial tool known as Epicore.
