272  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Network Pen Testing / Re: so is any one nice enough to...... on: February 26, 2008, 08:08:49 AM
Like Role, I've been a computer hobbiest for years. I finally broke down and got a degree in software engineering and a masters in information secuirty. I did my early learning on my own by working with various OSes and hardware. If you get a chance, build a PC or upgrade an existing. You will learn alot. And learn from your mistakes. I broke more computers than I actually fixed early on. I have learned and developed and still find more to learn and more to know. Welcome to a world where the instant you learn something, it is out of date.

And like don said, ask questions. In my short time on this forum, I have found many of the members to be a wealth of knowledge and more than willing to share. Good luck.

For actually running the VM, look at VMWare Server. Its free and offers USB and better support for Linux than MS Virtual PC. Good luck.
274  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Malware / Re: $20,000 Bounty for Windows Exploit - Ethical? on: February 25, 2008, 11:11:45 PM
Do you think the source of the funding would possibly influence the results of the research?

As for my two cents on the larger picture: there is nothing wrong with being paid to research and find exploits after all, some of us work at hacking into systems and get paid for it. It is how the product is ultimately used that makes it wrong. Let’s take the gun example. There is nothing dangerous about a gun by itself. Add ammo and someone with no experience and we start building a recipe for disaster. Now what does this persone do with the gun? Does he use it to stave off a burglary of his home or does he rob a bank? The gun just like an exploit is nothing more than a tool. It is how the tool is sued that makes it unethical.

But that is just my two cents.

What is scary with this is that I use VMs as a sandbox to protect my host system. Thanks for passing this on don.

277  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / CEH - Certified Ethical Hacker / Re: attending CEH EXam on: February 25, 2008, 10:58:44 PM
I just passed the CEH exam. I did the course by itself and didn't pass the first time. I learned some from that adn went at the studying again. The second time, I used the Exam Prep book by Gregg. I really liked it as well as the practice tests included with it. Don't underestimate the exam or you will wish that you had studied more. Oh -- familiarity with the tools will help.

That is great don. I just finished my CEH today and was quite happy to pass this time. Thanks to you and a few others for the suggested study material. I'm now working on getting my CCNA if for no other reason than to have a much greater understanding of networking.

I'm a 360 owner but have avoided buying in to the HD war. Besides, my TV does 480p or 1080i. I figured that I would wait until I replace the tube.

282  Resources / Tools / Re: Metasploit 3.1, I need some info on: February 11, 2008, 02:13:23 PM
To avoid something like that in the future, you could set them up in a virtual PC. All of my toys are there along with a target. This way, I can always reset the machine without damaging my host system. There are a couple of freebee vm products available like VMWare Server and MS VirtualPC. Both are available directly from the vendors. I will say though, that VirtualPC does not play well with Linux variants.

Hey all,

I'm looking to make a career transition into the IT world. I am coming form the military where I worked on airplanes, not computers or networks. They have, however, always been a hobby. I'm looking for a way to increase my basic skills primarily in the security side of the house but also in system admin and network admin. I have a BS in Software Engineering and a Masters in Information Systems Security. If any of you all know of an opportunity, I would be greatly appreciative. If you need more information or a resume, you can contact me at sgt_mjc@gimail.af.mil. Thanks for all your help.

Mike
285  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Other / Re: Legality of spy software on: February 08, 2008, 02:37:26 PM
Various user accounts would not make a difference. So long as the spy ware is installed by an account with admin privileges, then it would run no matter what account is being used. As for the legality of the whole thing, it is perfectly acceptable for parents to use programs to monitor their kids’ activities. Should it be any different for spouses? Of course, this brings up the whole issue of trust on the part of the couple, but that is a different argument. Go ahead and spy on your spouse all you want, but be prepared for the consequences when he or she finds out.
