1  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Certification / SOX Certification - Need Advice on: July 21, 2008, 10:44:49 AM
Can anyone provide info on SOX (Sarbanes Oxley) Certification? Not directly related to security, but covers aspects of IT risk controls.
Soxcert.org is the site providing it. Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Raj.
2  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Other / Re: Monitoring for new machines on the network on: February 04, 2008, 12:39:29 PM
Thanks Slimjim,
The network is managed by a separate group. There are scripts out there that help do so, but from what I have seen, it needs good amount of scripting.
For now, they have agreed to implement port security on open ports that will let us know if something was connected to those ports. (Not necessarily MAC/IP info, but just an indication that the port came up or went down). We would then use it with our DHCP log alerts to identify the location. Lets see how it goes. Thanks for all the inputs.

Yes, they support SNMP. Is there someway for a switch to periodically dump its CAM table. That would give information about MAC and ports.

We have scripts that detect new clients on the network by monitoring DHCP logs for new IP registrations within minutes of the machine getting an IP address. However it is not possible to identify the switch port the machine was connected to. There are about 100 switches and about 25 segments across multiple floors. Has anyone encountered this situation?
5  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Other / Re: Microsoft Bids $45 Billion for Yahoo on: February 02, 2008, 05:28:48 PM
I wonder how Microsoft is justifying it

Yahoo was trading at $20 before the news. Its total value with 1.4B shares was $28B.

Microsoft says it will achieve $1B in annual cost savings. That translates to a value of about $10B (assumig 10% cost of equity)

Which means MS should be paying $38B. But its initial offer was $43B.
Microsoft is offering 62% premium! YHOO SHs stand to gain whereas MSFT SHs lose! No wonder MSFT declined by 6%, even the markets are skeptical about the valuation!

Thanks everyone,
Don, to answer your question, the columns and the forums were helpful in providing information and or links that enhanced my understanding of the concepts.

In addition to knowing the tools, I tried these tools on my test network to get a good understanding of its commands, outputs and logs. This helped me on my test. For tools that I could not try, I looked at the sample outputs on sites to study their workings.

Staying in touch with current security news and tools through the site also helped a lot.

Hi,

I am reading the testking prepration questions, it seems by the questions that I need to know to convert to binary and ascii by memory only. in the official CEH book it doesnt mentioned. do I need to study it? does testking is a good source for studying?

thanks a lot,

Juan

Juan,
If it is IP address conversions, try working backwards from the given choices to arrive at the question. I found that helpful. Still it does require memory and time.
