A random ethics question popped into my head this morning while I was waiting for the metro. Is it ethical to hack into a system if your government is paying/authorizing/encouraging this activity, for simplicity sake we will assume using Black Hat techniques?
Now I want to caveat this is theoretical, I have no personnel experience with this type of activity.
From a legal standpoint it depends a lot on the specific scenario and could be debated endlessly but I was wondering from a purely ethical point of view. I really can't decide for myself if this would be ethical or not so I am looking forward to some good responses. No wrong answers here I just want to find out what everyone thinks.
The biggest problem I see with this type of information gathering is that if the box was insecure enough that the Hackactivist could drop a Trojan and gather the information why couldn't someone have dropped the porn on the box the exact same way? What better way for a hacker to get revenge on some judge who sentenced them to prison. Compormise their PC, drop some really illegal and disgustging stuff, and later play the gray hat and "find" the stuff on the PC. BTW JobMatchNow http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hacktivism.
The link above has some decent tips about putting your resume together. Keep in mind you should format your resume with a specific category of jobs in mind. For example if you applying for a Network Admin job you are going to highlight different aspects of your background and experience then if you applying for a Security Analyst job. Also expect to spend some time writing your resume if it only takes you 10-20 mins to write your resume then you should try again. Once you have finished your resume ask people to review it for you to pick up mistakes and get their opinion on how well it reads. By the way if you know someone who works in an HR department or who hires people they are great people to ask to review your resume. Again Good Luck!
A good way to get you foot in the door of the IT industry is to take a job at a Help Desk. I know it seems low level and below your skill level and it probably is but a lot of companies like to hire from inside the company. If you show your supervisor (who probably supervises hirer level positions also) sees that you really know what you are doing then you have a good leg up on any positions you apply for in the company. You may have to put in a year or two at a lower pay and resposiblitly level but experience is experience and next step you could get a network admin job for the company. Welcome to EH Network and Good Luck!
I am an avid Vista hater but iSmith does have a point for a casual "at home" user Vista works just as well (from a security standpoint maybe better) as XP. That being said I will never run Vista on one of my home machines...well maybe in my lab to test against .
Hmmm... sounds like a joke to me. If not I have to be honest I agree with ChrisG. You don't by any chance read BOFH (Bastard Operator from Hell) do you? Cause that is a favorite command of Simon's. LOL!
Well the long and the short of it is that you aren't going to get much more then general help from an open forum about an active security issue that you can't disclose details about (for obvious reasons). If you do work for the ISP and need fix this security breach then your best bet is to tell management to pony up some cash and hire a security professional to take a look at your network. Now if you need help finding a security professional you came to the right place! Post your geographical location and ask for someone in your general area to send you a Private Message so you can make arrangements. Good Luck!
