One book I recommend is Hacking Exposed, in it's fifth edition. It's a good starter on the general topics of security while at the same time being hands-on and showing you the real tools and methods used by hackers, and pen testers.

Well, I  would report it and then it's up to the admin. But you also have to consider if others could be hurt by this exploit. If it's a e-store maybe someone could steal creditcard numbers, but if it's just a random guys home page, well it's his problem.

You could send a arp request:

Who has 192.168.1.14?
Ans: 192.168.1.14 is on 00:72:B5:F8:83:CA:B4:44

That is if your network structure allows it (don't know anything about networks that big).

Thanks for your answers, I've checked out LSO and subscribed to their newsletter and it seems like a good site, but I'll also see if I can set up some kind of hacklab. Or secretly use the schools network  Wink

Hi, I've been reading a lot about hacking/security and now I would like to get some real experience, since I don't want to hack other peoples computers I was hoping for some wargame, or maybe set up a hacklab at home.

So the questions are:

1. Do you know any good active wargames?

2. What software, operating systems etc. should I install in a hacklab?

If you are on good therms with him you could ask him for access, and permission to, not hack, but test the security.

I havn't used ie since version 5, correct me if I'm wrong but didn't firefox implement tabbed browsing, pop-up blocking and search bar before ie? And vista was the first one to implement kernel protection Tongue

I've used Cain with great success, it also has online lookup against a rainbow table, I've never tried that feature, but it should make the cracking a lot easier. But that won't learn you much about how Ophcrack works Tongue

Well,l, if you switch mac adress between sessions and don't brag about it you shuold be albe to get away with it, if you can break the security. But is it worth the risk of being kicked out  of school, i don't think so.
