No big deal; if it isn't working, you can't really break it. I just messed around with a ton of different stuff until I found something that worked. I do still have another question though. I'm running backtrack on an HP zv6000, and the only way I can get it to boot all the way is to disable acpi by adding the acpi=off line at boot. Is there a way to set that option as part of the default so I can disable the prompt and timeout and just boot straight into backtrack?
Lesser hassle, disabling that gives me no way to check my battery level, any suggestions on a different work around or something else I could use?

bkevin: I think I managed to solve it. Go back into your lilo.conf file. You'll probably see a section that is commented so:
# Windows bootable partition config begins other = /dev/hda1 *bunch of other stuff I don't remember* # Windows bootable partition config ends
If you're not running a dual-boot system, you can delete that whole section. After saving and exiting, re-run lilo -v. It should complete successfully. Exit out of everything, reboot (make sure to remove usb or cd), and you'll see the lilo boot screen. I had trouble at first until I realized that if I needed to provide options, I had to type Linux (options). Hope that helps.

I was following along great until the very end... when I typed lilo -v I get the following error:
Fatal: First sector of /dev/hda1 doesn't have a valid boot signature
I know I designated it as boot when I ran fdisk, so I'm not sure what that means.

Okay, so I've been trying to install BackTrack (or any operating system) on this laptop (HP zv 6000) for a day or two now. My problem: the cd-rom drive doesn't work. I've managed to turn the LiveCd into a LiveUSB, and I can successfully boot up from there. However, I can't manage to install to my hard disk. I think I have some old ubuntu files that are in the way. I've tried following the guides on both the backtrack webpage and wiki with no success. The built-in gui install inside of KDE doesn't seem to work either. Any suggestions?
