I haven't read the book but based on the book description and reviews posted in amazon, I'll definitely be getting my hands on this one.
332  Resources / Career Central / Re: Poll: Bolster Your Career in 2007 on: January 15, 2007, 08:38:15 PM
I myself voted for "Gained More Practical Experience" because as far as resume goes, I think it adds more value than a certification. The knowledge and skills acquired by practical experience tends to stick with you longer than what you have studied or memorized for a certification exam. Furthermore, I live in the caribbean and down here the majority of employers seek for individuals with experience. And judging by their job postings and how much they willing to pay for a certified professional, certifications here is not nearly as important as work experience.

333  Features / Dec 06 - A Christmas (Hacking) Story / Re: [Article]-A Christmas (Hacking) Story - Answers and Winners on: January 13, 2007, 05:39:05 PM
Congratulations to all the winners. This was my first challenge and I have to say that I had lots of fun doing it. One of the cool thing about the hacking challenge is, at the end Skoudis gives you the complete answers, thus making the challenge an educational one. Can't wait to try the next challenge. Thanks Don and Skoudis for this opportunity. Also thanks for mentioning my name, a.k.a "Kelvin". I was really stoked!!!

Oh, that was hysterical. I was laughing my ass off through out the reading. Uh... naive, naive of him. That's what you get when you don't know what you're messing with. May this be a lesson to all the people considering hiring an underground hacker for malicious intent.

Yes it's possible to pass an exam only by using braindumps or of other sorts, but you wouldn't gain any knowledge of the subject matter.

I got my CEH v5 courseware from Element K by calling them up. It was quick and easy.

339  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / CEH - Certified Ethical Hacker / Re: CEH 5 Review on professional securitytesters.org on: December 21, 2006, 08:48:56 PM
After reading the article, it made me realize that you definitely have to create a list (with description) of all the tools mentioned in the CEH v5 courseware and memorize them in order to pass the exam. Wow, this is going to take me while to compile this list. EC-Council should at least provide students a mini review guide of tools if it's so important for the exam, I mean,  why do we have to go to all this trouble after paying around 400 to 500 dollars for the courseware.

The Web site's name tells it all. BadVista.org, a Web site run by the Free Software Foundation, is devoted to the mission of exposing the harms inflicted on computer users by Microsoft's Windows Vista operating system and promoting free software alternatives that respect users' security and privacy rights.

Oh boy, this is not good for Microsoft.

341  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Other / Hackers Selling Vista Zero-Day Exploit on: December 21, 2006, 12:12:57 AM

Underground hackers are hawking zero-day exploits for Microsoft's new Windows Vista operating system at $50,000 a pop, according to computer security researchers at Trend Micro.

The Windows Vista exploit—which has not been independently verified—was just one of many zero-days available for sale at an auction-style marketplace infiltrated by the Tokyo-based anti-virus vendor.

Hey Kev,

There are several talented black hats in the underground that have created sophisticated exploits, but they just keep them quiet. These exploits are then later developed by security professional and get all the credit. Just think of all the vulnerabilities that have been discovered in the past (thanks to 0-day exploit) that were unknown to the security community. And then think of all the vulnerabilities and exploits that exist, which are yet to be discovered, but are out there in the wild, shared among the black hats or secretly kept by the owner.
345  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / General Certification / Re: Certifications +/-? on: December 14, 2006, 10:04:15 PM
I definitely agree with kev. But not only that,  when you take the time to study for such certification, you learn new things that you did not know before which could really help you in your career. I have been working in the security field for 2 years now and in a sense, I'm still a newbie. So I decided it would be good to obtain a few certs and learn to new things in the process. When I studied for my security+ cert,  I gained some knowledge that really help me on what I do today. Thats why I recommend before heading out to a bootcamp, to purchase books and study guides and take the time to read and study the materials carefully. This is not about just passing a test, it's about acquiring knowledge and skills that you can apply to your job experience.

After passing my first certification test, I was so happy and proud of myself, it felt really good and to tell you the truth I got hooked. I wanted to learn more, and thus I'm continuing in my journey to obtain another cert for which I'm currently studying, the CEH v5.
