301  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Other / Re: Metasploit: The Penetration Tester's Guide Vs Metasploit Unleashed/Megaprimer on: October 10, 2011, 12:38:52 AM
I both the book and then I found out about the megaprimer. The book is definitely worth it but having actual videos out there that show you what to do step by step..awesome stuff. I would suggest buying the book and also using megaprimer for real life examples.
302  Resources / Career Central / Re: Landed a job with a good amount of Linux involved..should I crank out Linux cert on: September 27, 2011, 11:55:26 AM
Would you say linux+ > LPIC-2 > RHCSA > RHCE....decent path?

303  Resources / Career Central / Landed a job with a good amount of Linux involved..should I crank out Linux cert on: September 26, 2011, 09:15:25 PM
I found a position where I'll be using linux to troubleshoot equipment and some other techincal support duties. I was thinking about cranking out Linux certs (maybe L+, LPIC-2, LPIC-3, some red hat certs) within my 1st year of being there and after the 1 year of experience and possibly 3-5 linux certs..then possibly looking for some type of linux sys. admin job? I was looking at some job posting and a lot of them have 1 year as a min., so I'm thinking the certs may help me out. I bet the pay would be a lot better!

My goal before this job was to get into networking(maybe wireless) but after getting this job, I think I should maximize my opportunity with this new linux role. I would enjoy both networking and linux jobs, even though I might feel like I wasted my time getting my CCNA (but it could help later on in my career?).

Is it a good idea to maybe abandon my networking job/career hunt for now and start working towards a linux career? I've always heard in IT, EXPERIENCE IS #1 (over education and certs)!

What do you guys think?
304  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Wireless / When (if ever) will companies start moving from ethernet to primarily wireless? on: September 01, 2011, 03:56:12 PM

I'm beginning to think I want my expertise to be in wireless before I start my pentesting/security career. Will companies ever start moving towards using primarily wireless networks? I would think they would because tech is growing so fast (but I really dont know?), so Im thinking about getting the CWNP certs, CCNA- CCIE wireless.

I would like to hear everyones thoughts.

You would say the OSCP for your first pentesting course? Do you think someone should take a lower course first, or go straight into the OSCP?

SephStorm,

Ive been researching the past month on the exact question. I was leaning toward the elearning training (student and pro)..but then I thought the student might be to basic. So then I thought about doing hacking dojo or hackers academy for a month or two, then try for the eCPPT. Im leaning toward hacker academy because you can go to whatever section you want, hacking dojo makes you pass certain areas before you can move on to bigger and better topics. Plus hacker academy is 97/month and hacking dojo is 150ish/month. From what I have read, I dont believe hacking dojo is worth 50 dollars more a month. But thats just me.

309  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Web Applications / Re: SANS Sec542 (GWAPT) on: July 29, 2011, 12:51:38 AM
great review. Im probably about 8-12 months away from taking any SANS classes but I cant wait. Everything I hear about them is always positive. I hope to take GPEN, GWAPT, and GCIH.

Did you feel that you could of taken the exam after the class, or would you need a little more time to study?

thanks

I wouldnt mind hearing some of your personal experiences. I dont want to be a script kiddie haha

I understand what you meant. I was just surpised script kiddies use metasploit. When I heard of SK's, I imagined someone using wireshark, nmap, or nessus and not really understanding what they are doing. Metasploit seems complicated, so I didnt think script kiddies used it.

That does help. So alot of people who use metasploit are script kiddies? I'm thinking about joining hacking dojo, hacker academy, or elearnsecurity.com but after reading some reviews...I dont know if they are really worth the money.

Are you working in the security field?

Thanks for the comments.

So if they dont use one of the framework platforms, how would they exploit the targert system? I dont know if I'm asking the right question, Im just trying to figure out how to word my question properly.

Hey everyone,

315  Resources / Career Central / Are there any certs that would help with my new job? on: May 19, 2011, 05:35:39 PM
I'm currently in the works to getting a fraud analyst job and we will look at data and other systems to see if people are using hacking into routers and using the phone line fraudulently.

Are there any certs that would help understand how people hack routers to get phone use or anything along those lines?

thanks everyone
