Laura's course is NOT a security course. It covers the same material as in the book she wrote. It just makes it easier because you are following along in the traces she demonstrates. It is not a substitute for a GCIA or OSCP or any other security course. As I said that's comparing apples and oranges. What you will learn is how to dissect packets so later on, you'll understand how an attack does what it does at a packet level. It covers a few attacks but mainly it's about all the other stuff you can use Wireshark for like troubleshooting http, ftp, dhcp, etc.

Hi Don, I'd like to hear the recording but the signup page takes you to a "The webinar is over" page....no place to sign up. Please post a link to it when it becomes available please.
I'm sooo busy with my new job that I can't access EH as often as I used to. Also, the information and advice this site has given me was instrumental in me getting the job, so thanks everybody!
P.S. HAPPY HOLIDAYS to everyone.

I've taken the course and for me, it was worth every penny. My wireshark knowledge was pretty good before taking the course but after I took the course, I'd say it increased exponentially. In fact, the certification was probably why I got my new job. I'm doing a lot of troubleshooting log files and quite often, we'll have to look at an actual capture to see what exactly is wrong. As they say, packet's don't lie.
Laura is a good teacher and the course materials are extensive and clear. She repeats important topics several times so it really makes it easy to remember. It's not topic specific like a SANS course. It's apples and oranges. It covers all the major protocols and all the different ways wireshark can analyze a problem. For 700 it's not a bad deal. I can't remember exactly how many hours of videos it was but I seem to recall about 40. I don't think you will be disappointed but as always YMMV.

Starting with the obvious: - Use a live cd such as backtrack on a usb stick
- Change your MAC address
- Use someone's unsecured wireless router away from your house and preferably state (illegal)
- Use regular security precautions- http://thc.org/papers/COVER-1.TXT
- Use a VPN like vpntunnel.se that has been paid for with an untraceable money order under a fake name
I highly suggest that you use this info wisely as none of it is foolproof and I hope you truly are writing a research paper (many new posters come here to find out just such info and end up getting themselves thrown in jail). Remember there are people here that work for the good guys, myself included, that do just that (get people thrown in jail).

Originally, the mask from the movie comes from Guy Fawkes, the English mercenary who tried to kill the King and whose effigy is burned on Nov. 5th every year on Bonfire Night.
This is where the word 'guy' comes from, meaning a "grotesquely or poorly dressed person".
It is ironic though that Time-Warner profits from the sale.

Just a thought- When you stick you're name on something and sell it, you are responsible. If I slap some stickers on a book over the authors name and start selling it as my own, I am responsible.
The simplest solution is just pay Peter's lawyer costs and give him access to review your current course. You've already apologized. Then go after the original culprit for the losses. That case is a slam dunk. If he has any sense (which is doubtful considering his past actions), he'll settle . If not, his check will be garnished for quite a while.
The damage to your company's reputation grows by the day and it would behoove you to nip it in the bud.

107- You might want to consider using a Live CD or bootable USB stick when you are out and about (I would suggest the latest Ubuntu if you have little experience or a secure distro if you do). It's somewhat safer than using Windows directly from your hard drive.
If you must use Windows, then (with all the above advice from other forum members) use Sandboxie to make it much harder for a script kiidie to do permanent damage in addition to encrypting all your sensitive data (most people like TrueCrypt).

The main difference is (was) Gnome. I use it as well as BT5. There's more distros for security out there you may want to look into.
