1  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / CEH - Certified Ethical Hacker / Re: CEH Bootcamp Review - by a new guy on the block on: July 10, 2006, 10:00:41 AM
Now I feel like I should be doing the Bootcamp in preparation for the test.  For now I have been using books, online info and tools to prepare.  Glad you are all progressing with this.
2  Features / Book Reviews / Re: [Article]-CEH: Exam Prep 2 - Technical Foundations of Hacking on: June 30, 2006, 07:26:21 AM
I purchased this book a few weeks ago and have read it once and will read it again before taking the CEH exam.  If you compare the objectives to the EC Council course outline then it looks like this book does not cover evverything yet it covers stuff that may not be in the exam but relevant to Ethical Hacking nonetheless.

As an exam prep I would have preferred the book to mirror the EC Council objectives a little closer.  I think this book is trying to cover ethical hacking in a logical manner as well as being a guide for the exam and that never really works for me.  If it says exam prep then that's what I want it to be.

I do not have the EC Council literature but I do have the course slides so I cannot really comment on how well this prepares you for the exam.  It is a well written book, with some grammatical errors but nothing major.  Until I take the exam I will not know how well this book prepares you for the test so I will hold judgement on that.

It is worth getting in my opinion.

Having a degree helped me move to the USA from the UK and get an H1-B visa.  It has probably helped secure job interviews as well.  Having said that, I have now been out of work for over a year and cannot get an IT position for move nor money even after working for consulting companies in the USA and as an independant contractor in the UK for the last 7 years.  Before that I have been involved in every area of IT from a PC Support Technician and mid range admin to a Lotus Notes architecture guy.  This is partly why I am now getting into the security side of things and taking the CEH exam.

Degrees used to be an indication of a certain level of intelligence but they are as common as MCSE's these days so my advice is to get up to speed with the latest technology, learn all you can about it and you will be picked up eventually.......I hope.....
5  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Certification / EC Council Self Study Material on: June 03, 2006, 02:02:10 PM
I am considering purchasing the EC Council self study material.  I am based in the UK which means I am apparently not supposed to order from the EC Council site.  Can anyone please clarify exactly what you receive with te self study material so I can ensure I do not pay hunderds of dollars (pounds) just for a manual.  I am led to believe that you get 3 manuals, cd's with all tools plus other funky stuff to boot.

Thanks.

I for one am hoping that with my knowledge to date and gaining certs like CEH and CPTS that I will be in a better position moving forward in the IT world as security becomes of paramount importance to both large and small organizations.  I consider myself more of a jack of all trades IT person rather than an expert in any particular area which I feel is quite rare these days.  That said, I am still searching for companies that realise the importance of a real spread of knowledge, they seem few and far between.

The more "tools" there are to help hack and the more people want to hack then the more there should be a need for people who are able to counter the hackers.  If this is true then those at the forefront of hacking countermeasures should benefit the most.  Isn't it time IT security folk got the recognition they deserve?!

I am also missing those chapters.  How can I get hold of them? I can contact the Career Academy I guess.

So far I am using the career academy videos and the Exam Prep book by Michael Gregg.  Is it worth it to get the EC Council material?

Thanks Negrita!  I have never failed a cert exam but there is always a first time, just wanted to know the score should I not make the grade.

Hi.

I have an authorization code for the CEH exam.  Does anyone know if you need a new code if you fail the exam and wish to retake it or if you can use the same code?

Thanks.

I also do not have the extra topics from Career Academy.  Anyone else got 'em?
11  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Certification / Re: Try Career Academy Certification Videos for Free on: May 23, 2006, 10:34:07 AM
I assume they are only offering one or two of the topics for free.  I am using an older version of their videos which does not include viruses and worms, physical security and pen testing.

I like the vids but I would like more detail to be honest.  They are a bit vague and I wonder if they are really useful for the certification.  I will post again once I have got through the series.

12  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / The Charter Study Group - Pen Test / Re: Charter Study Group - Pen Test - Don on: May 23, 2006, 10:26:41 AM
I have been working through CEH topics on DVD training by Mile2.  They seem pretty good but a little generalised at present.  They also say the training will enable you to take the CPTS test but I somehow doubt that.  DVD training is the next best thing to attending classes IMHO and better than just studying a book.  I will get familiar with the tools as they seem to focus heavily on those.

I will keep reading the posts here for useful tips for CEH study.

Thanks for the wlecome.

Hi Don et al.

I have just joined the forums here with a view to gaining some assistance, advice and guidance with my career goals.

I am looking to move into the security arena of IT after a lengthy stint as an IT consultant working in the UK and the USA.  I have been in IT for over 10 years and worked my way from a PC support guy to a Lotus Notes Consultant.  I have been approved by EC Council to take the CEH exam but now I see the CNDA exam I may choose to take that instead.  I also wish to pursue the CPTS cert in the future.

It looks like the study and practice for the CEH (or CNDA) test will take some time and involve a lot of reading and working in a lab environment to get familiar with the tools and techniques that will be tested.

I would appreciate any suggestions as to the best course of action.  I normally don't spend long gearing up for tests but this one makes me a little nervous.  I will be viewing  a few DVD's on the CEH topics and perhaps will buy the EC Council courseware but that is very expensive.

An example test lab would be great too.  I will need a few laptops to get it going.

I hope to be a valuable member of this community and wish you all success in achieving your goals.

Thanks.

Steve
