Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Malware / EICAR?
|

|
So all of this afternoon i've been getting alerts from MSE and Bitdefender that it is detecting the EICAR test virus on my PC (In C:\Windows\TEMP). Now, I am familiar with EICAR, but there is no reason it would be on this PC.Is anyone aware of any attacks or malware that masquerades as EICAR? I ask because it is continuously detected, with no action from me, i.e now browsers opened or any such thing. I may disconnect from the internet to see if it is still being affected...

That all being said, I do not support EC-Council or the CEH. Then why support them by recommending that people not "skip" it? Don its a like hate relationship. The training is a decent introduction. Having the cert has been a boost to my career, so I don't feel I can completely throw them under the bus.

I agree with all the users in this thread. The only thing I would advise Don to say is don't "skip" it. If you need a primer on the threats that are out there and the ideas behind the countermeasures, look at the CEH material. Having the cert will allow you to have brand recognition as well as being accepted for some government work that may come along until DoD pulls their heads out of...
again, good material to know, if you practice using the main tools listed in the CEH curriculum, you may be able to get an understanding of the threats against you.
That all being said, I do not support EC-Council or the CEH.

Are you going for a degree or do you just want to learn? If you're not interested in a degree, check out Coursera and/or Udacity.
I'm split on education. On one hand many federal GS Jobs will require a degree to even be considered I've been determined to be unqualified for gs5 and above... I think i'm being filtered because of the lack of a degree before everything. I'm also considering a future in Cyber LE, and all Special Agent positions require a degree (excluding Army CID). Outside of that, the biggest desire I have is to gain hands on experience. If I dont get it through school (certificate program), the only option is a Jr. Network Engineer/Admin position, which I can do, assuming I can find one in a decent locale.

I can't see the first page of this thread, so i'll copy the others...
1. Are you on-board with what we may have to do? No idea, whats that?
2. How extensively do you use PMs through our forums? Not very often. Maybe once every few months and it's usually other people initiating the conversation. -Same as OP.
3. Who's interested in Blogging for EH-Net? I'd be interested.
4. Who's willing to help test? If there's a task list i'd be in.
5. Who's willing to possibly help moderate the forums? I've modded before, but I don't see much needing to be done except removing spam. I'd be interested.
6. Anyone willing to lend a hand who has expertise in PHP, MySQL, design? If I knew PHP/MySQL, definitely...but I don't - same as OP.
7. Should we implement OpenID, login with Twitter? I dont use either of these services, and dont plan to. Having the option would be nice for any who use it, but not as a requirement.

This topic always confused me. By reading, I understood a VPN as a tunnel through the internet, and eventually I understood that firewalls and routers could provide this capability. When I originally encountered them however, I found online services, and dyndns services and I was confused as to why this stuff was needed and how it worked (still confused).

Hello, and welcome to EH.net Unfortunatly last I heard, there aren't many who have taken the CPTE course, and those who have seen it have mixed reviews. Me personally, I have seen the CBT, and I liked it more than the CEH materials. I personally would be very interested in seeing a review of the whole program, including the lab manual and "cyber range".
Please let us know your thoughts, as well as your previous experience in the field.

It really is impractical for a person to attend SANS training unless it is paid by a company. Even as a facilitator/moderator you have to factor in additional costs for lodging and travel, food, ect. I really can't see it happening for me until I get a sponsorship from a company.
