46  EH-Net / News Items and General Discussion About EH-Net / Re: EH-Net Exclusive: 90% Off Skoudis vLive 'Bad Guys Are Winning' on: April 07, 2010, 11:22:53 AM
This is awesome I wish this would happen more often. The only thing that makes it hard is the time of day it's going on. I wont be able to get away from work at that time to watch. If we register is there something that will allow us to view it at a later time? If so then I will be signing up.
47  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / General Certification / Finally taking Security+ April 20th *Update PASSED* on: April 07, 2010, 10:39:18 AM
I have been putting this off for far to long. Getcertified4less had a voucher for $200 so I jumped on it. I am actually pretty nervous about this one because I haven't studied in awhile. Looks like I will be cramming for the next 1 1/2 weeks.

I know a lot of the material but there are areas I am week in like all the different analysis formulas for risk, SLE, and so on. Plus I need to get upto speed on asymmetric stuff again.

I hope I pass. Will see I guess.

51  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / General Certification / Re: New guy here with a few questions. on: April 03, 2010, 01:20:56 AM
As usual thanks for the info dynamik. That was the cert route I was thinking as well.  Would you recommend throwing the GPEN in before the CEH? I have full access to safaribooksonline.com and will use that to its fullest extent. I will look for the books on there that you recommend. I signed up for SANS work study for the Salt Lake City forensics bootcamp. I will just have to wait to see if a get accepted.

Yes I am putting a link to another forum but its a good forum. Here is lots of good info on Western Governors University.

http://www.techexams.net/forums/jobs-degrees/51715-western-governors-university-questions-answers-threads-related-wgu.html

I have an A.A.S. in Computer Network Technology, and am currently pursuing a B.S. in Information Technology from Western Governors University.

Anyone from South Carolina on here? I just moved from Michigan last year and would like to make contacts.

I'm interested in hearing your thoughts on the WGU.

How is the job market in South Carolina. I've been thinking about leaving Michigan for somewhere else, and South Carolina was one of the places on the list.
53  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / GPEN - GIAC Certified Penetration Tester / Re: GSEC and GPEN Down on: April 01, 2010, 05:13:42 PM
Nice job on passing both. As for the GSEC what made you decide on that and not go for something else a little higher up? What was your take on the GPEN in comparison to the CEH? I am very interested in the GSEC practice exam. Like I said in the other post I made I am willing to trade or get you an o'reily book if interested.

Congrats and good luck on the CISSP.
54  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / General Certification / Re: Question for those who have taken the GSEC. on: April 01, 2010, 04:32:59 PM
My next question is have any of you taken the SSCP exam. If so What is your take on it's difficulty compared to the GSEC exam. I am planing on taking both so I am trying to get an idea of what I am getting myself into and maybe where to go next in a logical progression of difficulty in these exams.

Thanks.

Thanks for the info guys. I would be interested in whatever you have dynamik just let me know when and if I can help you out in anyway. I do get O'rielly books for free if you want to trade something.

MicroJay this is a open book test from what I have read. What can I bring into the test with me? Can you use the internet to look stuff up? I read that that was done at one point. Can I bring any books that I want or just specific study material I used? Or is it sans material only allowed?

Thanks for the help.
56  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / General Certification / Question for those who have taken the GSEC. on: March 31, 2010, 02:16:38 PM
I want to take this test here in about 6 months but money is tight and paying $3500 for sans material is a big stretch. For those that took it did any of you use something else instead of sans for study? If so what? Any recommendations? I am sure it has been asked but how much harder than the Sec+ is the GSEC?

Thanks for the help.

Here is a link to another forum where quite a few members are attending WGU. Might find something useful in the posts.

59  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / General Certification / Re: New guy here with a few questions. on: March 11, 2010, 02:21:14 PM
You are right that I dont want to learn to just harden systems and firewalls. I want to know ethical hacking as well. I just think I would understand the ethical hacking side better if I had a strong foundation of security topics and get the basics down. I have heard that the SSCP is a technical test where it goes deeper into the how and why then cissp where it is as they say a mile wide and an inch deep. I figured that the sscp was more deep then wide and could help me focus on the technical.
60  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / General Certification / New guy here with a few questions. on: March 11, 2010, 01:57:20 PM
This is my first post here and hopefully it makes sense.

I am going to take the security+ exam here soon and am wondering what is the next logical step in certs for security related knowledge? I want to take the sscp, gsec, ceh, and possibly scnp. The question is what order? I don't have much of a desire to take the cissp as its more for management from what i hear and I want the technical hands on stuff.

So in your opinions what is next out of those certs?

Is the gsec harder then sscp?

Thanks for the help guys.
