1  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Forensics / Re: Google History on: April 02, 2008, 11:58:06 AM
Cheers for the help so far!

In regards to the content, I don't believe it is illegal, i just guess some people like certain things others dont.

its not a legal issue, just something people should really not be looking at at work

In regards to narrowing it down to the people involved, if the date is closer than 9 months, it will narrow it down substantially.

To Shawal:

Cheers for the link! i will check it out when im on the office!

Thanks again guys

A bit more info then;

I'm currently studying I.T at college and off to study Computer security at uni in september. I work part time for an estate agents when im not at college.
This therefore makes me the 'I.T Guy'.

I have to show them everything they don't know how to do.

So our office is only small. None of the computers are passworded or anything of such so it would be easy for someone to search such content on someone elses computer. Because the boss regularly checks the history to see what everyone is looking at, everyone deletes their history.
This give me the problem of the history being deleted, but the google searchs still there

This person has blamed a former employee for the searches, but the former employee left 10 months ago. my first reaction was...well it wont store 10 months of searches. And secondly the hard drive was reformatted when he left...defiantly no data left.

So i have been asked to look into weather i can date the searches.

Which is when i turn to you rather useful and friendly fountains of knowledge for my help.

Thank you very much for your help so far. I am not working again until Saturday, when i will be looking into this, so anymore input up until then would be fantastic.

Thanks again!

Craig

Hi Guys,
I need a hand. My boss has approached me to have a look at one of the computers at work because someone has been searching some pretty obscene and disgusting things on google. They still appear in the google toolbar in Internet Explorer when you press down to see the recent searches.
my questions is, is there a way of finding out the date and time of these searches as to narrow down to who it could possibly be.

I was thinking it should be stored in cookies, but they may have deleted them.

Any help or input would be awesome!

Regards

Craig

Washboard abs?!  Well, that disqualifies almost everyone I know in IT.  Smiley  The skin complexion though?  Got that one nailed...

I'm probably a bad hacker because I don't have a WoW account or an EverQuest account. lol

Does CS Count?

To Don -

I was looking into weather you had any newbie threads on here and how to start etc so i have started browsing through some of the threads whilst making any contributions i can.

I have spent a while reading up on Security, hacking and forensics but i still havent been able to put any of these into practise due to not having any hands on experience.

i would be glad to help start a newbie section with what i have been looking at and what i would like to learn more about.

i will start looking through and finding some Threads of interest

Cheers

EDIT:

I have had a quick browse through to show the sorts of things i find useful.

I think the main thing that i struggle on whilst trying to gain the basic knowledge is understanding the logic behind how to acheive something. I can gain all the technical knowledge in the world about a subject from the internet, but until i can understand the logic behind it and how it is acheived in a non technical sense, it is hard to comprehend even trying.

For example i have avoided XXS [cross site scripting] for a while due to all the complex articles i read about it, but when you realise it is basically stealing cookies you can begin to think about why people would do this and  what you could do to protect yourself in the logical sense, then look into the technical ways of doing this.

So here are a couple of things i found good to read about:

Tools and Add on Tutorials: How tro use simple tools and firefox add ons such as http://www.ethicalhacker.net/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,54/topic,1146.0/

Passwords:
understanding passwords such as
http://www.ethicalhacker.net/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,54/topic,160.0/

And password cracking tolls have been a huge headache for me, so articles such as this are useful:
http://www.ethicalhacker.net/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,54/topic,23.0/

I think tutorials regarding tools such as Nmap and command line tools such as netstat would be a massive help.

I also feel a tutorial on setting up a virtual environment or lab would be great as it would help us newbies do some hands on stuff without wrecking our computers or putting in the wrong ip and scanning some governement agency =]

I hope this helps. Sorry its a bit long winded.

Nice post!

Glad iv sparked some interest in the social engineering side of things.

I think its an area that is overlooked, but is still an important part of the job.

Good job!

Thanks guys, glad you enjoyed it.

But for those people who do not enjoy the SE side of it because they have to talk to people, this article kin of proves to me that its not all about talking to the customer and trying to get there password, using this method the dont even need to talk to the staff.

Hey Guys,
me and my mate share a computer at our workplace to access the internet etc. After a bit of a tiff he has changed our account password.
Its running on Windows 98 and i was wondering if there is any way of changing it back, or deleting the password file by booting in DOS?

I haven't tried anything because it only happened yesterday.

Any help would be awesome

Cheers
