64  Features / Opinions / real hackers.... on: March 25, 2010, 11:03:23 AM
i thought i'd start a topic similar to the old "real programmers <programming related joke>"

i'll start: "real hackers don't use web browsers they telnet all the info  off the servers"  or "real hackers wish the celebrated the day before their birth because it was the greatest exploit of all time" or " real hackers don't drink coffee they inject it into their arm's vein that has the most traffic"

66  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Other / requirements to start a certification? on: March 19, 2010, 08:12:53 PM
hi, this may sound like a stupid question but here i go: is there any law or regulation for creating and running a certification program? Obviously you would need good material and a reason for people to get it but is there any governing body governmental or international?

68  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Network Pen Testing / Re: would this be ethical? on: January 02, 2010, 09:13:49 PM
thanks you guys and this wasn't for a pen test this was a hypothetical question
69  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Network Pen Testing / would this be ethical? on: January 02, 2010, 12:50:58 PM
Now i know this may seem strange but bare with me. OK ,I'm wondering if this hypothetical situation would fall in the "ethical end of the spectrum". the scenario is this. your doing a pen test on a large network with a server devoted just to running a IDS. would it be considered ethical to run a Denial of Service Attack to buy time to do the pen test? i know this doesn't sound probable or smart but would it be ethical?

you can research what ever software or OS is blocking you and look on metasploit or where ever you get your exploits from for a way to nullify or bypass it, or you could try and email users of that computer and do a bit of SEing to get some user names and forget traditional enumeration
71  Resources / News from the Outside World / Re: Bill would give the president emergency control of the Internet on: December 30, 2009, 11:05:49 AM
i find the whole idea scary, the Internet is a world wide network, what gives the U.S. or any country the right to control it? and laws like these give a leader power they aren't likely to give up. and forcing a security pro to go for a certifcation, that most likely won't relate to the field but just a way to keep us under their thumb is scary as well

thank you, what i hear most of you saying is i should go for a laptop I'm comfortable with, but shouldn't i make sure it has a wireless card that can inject packets? if so how do i determine that? should i just Google the card?
75  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Hardware / best laptop to start out on? on: December 28, 2009, 07:04:00 PM
hi I'm a high school senior who aspires to be a penetration tester, i intend to go for the backtrack certification and i have been reading white papers when ever i get a chance and i want to get a good yet affordable laptop i can use for pen testing once i get out of high school. I know you need a full lab to be successful, but thats just not viable for me right now what i need is a good laptop that i can use for pen testing and the backtrack course. So does anyone know a good yet affordable laptop that meets my needs. I know this isn't this kind of forum just i cant think of anywhere else to ask. any help would be appreciated
