1081  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Web Applications / Re: Who are reliable and trustworthy email providers? on: December 21, 2009, 08:39:06 PM
There are some decent price web hosts out there. I've been told it looks more professional with your own domain name. You might be able to write off the costs, and it won't mater where you are, it'll mostly always be up.

Just a suggestion, and I could be wrong on the write off part.

Probably just the *Nix admin in me coming out, but why not roll your own? I'm assuming you're running your own web page, if you control the server, you could set up your own mail. If not, it's a fun project.

Linux System Administration by Tom Adelstein and  Bill Lubanovic does a good job of taking you through what you need to know and how to run the system. the book is a little dated, but only in the OS and version numbers.

I know I'm lacking some of the skills, but I'm so going to play with this one. Maybe I'll learn some new things.

Thanks Ed, Kevin, and Don.

if you have a domain controller, you can change the passwords on the DC and when the boxes connect to the network, you should be able to get into the systems after.

It's more than just the size of the pipe. Filling the pipe is the fastest way, but if you have something without enough power behind the pipe, then they can DDOS by taking that off line too.

I'd scan through Hacking for Dummies.

There is more to look at then just DDOS if you want a secure site.

I'm going to have to find where to register around here now.

Ketchup

I doubt it's less about competency, and more about bonding issues.

Peter,

I forgot about this. Argh. Got a list of people to start contacting to get change going?

Not what we do here. Kind of defeats the ETHICAL part of the name.

However, 1000+ crew, needed to ship the ship out, why not get everyone who wants and needs internet access (I'm assuming 1/3, so we'll say 300 people) and try to negotiate a better rate for you're people.
1092  Resources / Career Central / Re: Standing on the Edge! on: November 01, 2009, 09:40:11 AM
Bala,
Don't be afraid to read. If you want to get a quick intro to computer security, and what it mean to be an Ethical Hacker, I'd suggest hacking for dummies. A new edition is due out in December. After that I'd look into some other security related books. As for your road map...

1. LAN / WAN  technologies
2. Routing Basics
3. WAN routing, Internet Cloud
4. How Ethernet works
5. IP Packets in detail.
6. RFC on IP, TCP/IP, UDP
7. Working with Wireshark - Tracing Packets and understanding it
8. Firewalls - Juniper / CISCO / Linux IP Tables
9. VLAN concept
10.VPN Techniques
11.Setting up VPN
12.Tunnelling
13.packet encryption...

The way I'd do it, 1, 5 and 7 together, 4, 2 and 3 together, 6, 13, 12, 9, 10, 11. Skip 6 except for the overviews if you want, and RFC 1918 only to the point where you know what addresses are reserved.

As Awesec and Mambru have said, most of this would be covered by studying for the CCNA. Also don't expect a cert to mean you're qualified for a job.

@ Alucian

They can keep it open source, and charge for training and support. Technically they could charge for the software as well, as long as they give the source code with the product (ala redhat)

Gengar13,

Do you think you could do a mini-review / you impressions of the book? I saw the 1 review on Amazon that Don mentioned but would be intereseted in hearing more opinions.

Like last time, I'm looking forward to the next part.

I've been waffling on whither I want to take this course or not. I doubt my skill set is strong enough (lack the programing), but I'm sold. I'm going to take this course next year. (gives me time to learn some perl and python between now and then).
