1  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Network Pen Testing / Re: Kali Linux Screen Resolution - VMware on: April 28, 2013, 01:00:11 PM
Worked.  Thank you.
2  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Network Pen Testing / Kali Linux Screen Resolution - VMware on: April 28, 2013, 11:05:51 AM
Finally got around to playing with Kali Linux.  I have it installed on VMware Workstation 9, installed VMware tools.......Can't get the resolution to change.

Checked all the forums, can't find anyone who has had this problem yet.  Everything I find is still for Backtrack 5 and those don't work.

Anyone know how to change your screen resolution in Kali Linux?
3  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Network Pen Testing / HackaServer - Anyone tried it? on: April 10, 2013, 02:49:33 PM
Has anyone tried hackaserver.com?

I believe they are fairly new.  It is supposed to be crowd-sourcing pen testing.  I'm not positive how it works for the Sys Admin but for pen testers you sign up, prove you have the skills and you can pen test for money.  Kind of like bugcrowd.com.

I'm curious if anyone has had any experience with these guys.
4  Resources / Career Central / Trying to become well rounded - Learning Blue Team skills on: April 05, 2013, 06:24:47 PM
I'm currently a Malware Analyst/Reverse Engineer.  I also have some experience in Network/Web App Penetration Testing, exploit development.

Before I got a job doing this stuff I read a few good books on the subject, paid to get a few certifications, got my degree.

I would like to round out my security skills with more of the defensive/Blue Team/incident response skills.  I'm aware that no one can be an expert in every area but I would like to be at least a little familiar in these areas.

Is there any good resources for this?  I know I could fork out the money for some SANS classes but I would rather not do that.  I've pre-ordered richard bejtlich new book Practical Network Monitoring that should be out this July.  Any other good resources like this to get a good understanding and practical application?

Thanks

Agreed, but a guy can dream.

Man, BT and PWB are hogging all the resources. This is why we can't have nice things. I'd rather have AWAE online than stock footage of stuff being smashed.

Maybe if we make this post long enough Offensive Security will take notice.
7  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Network Pen Testing / Re: Which course is best suited for me: eLearnSecurity Student or The Hacker Academy on: January 28, 2013, 01:08:54 PM
I am currently enrolled in both ELS and THA.

I originally enrolled in ELS to get some experience and knowledge to help me break into the security industry.  Once I got a job in the industry I was offered a good deal on THA so I took it.

I honestly think you would be good with either one.  I find that they complement each other very well but either one will serve as a good first step.  It depends on what you are looking for.

THA is still updating their course and putting out new modules.  Recently they put out new modules on the methodology of pen testing and project management of a Red Team. They also have other modules that you won't find in ELS like Reverse Engineering and Digital Forensics.

ELS however has the better labs in my opinion.  THA uses cloud based labs that never work for me and when they do they are slow.  You also have the option of doing it completely on VirtualBox which has worked for me.  ELS has nice labs and good walkthroughs to help you out.

As for the student ELS course.  I bought the package deal with both student and Pro.  Honestly, if you aren't completely new to security I don't think you need the student course.  It's pretty basic information and I think you could get the same information with a cheap security+ book.

Like I said they are both good first steps.  I am planning on taking the ELS cert test soon and then I'm going on to the OSCP.  And then when I get time I will go back to the forensics and reverse engineering courses in THA.  I would say take the ELS Pro if you want pen testing and THA if the extras interest you like forensics and reverse engineering.
