1  Resources / Tools / Re: Android tools on: August 23, 2012, 10:27:05 AM
Thanks,

I will check that out.  I have been taking a look at Mobisec and tools on there and I really like Scripting Layer for Android and the ability that gives you to write scripts to use.

There is also the OWASP Mobile Security Project stuff, which is where I saw the Mobisec the first time.

Notepadd++ is good as well, as TheXero stated.  Also if you use Linux gedit is an option as well as it will do essentially what notepadd++ will provide.  Eclipse with Pydev can be used in Windows or Linux and overall I think its pretty solid.  Everyone has their own tastes, just do what you feel most comfortable with.

About writing small GUI apps for python heres what I think is a good little resource:

http://www.java2s.com/Tutorial/Python/CatalogPython.htm

Check out the Tkinter and WxPython sections for GUI.

There are lots of resources you will find online for python, such as youtube videos, but I think this one is just good for writing a small GUI app for python and giving a quick example for an idea and you can just run with it.

n3r,

I use Eclipse with the Pydev plugin.  It is pretty easy to setup, the instructions are on their website http://pydev.org/.  Please let me know if you have any questions or need any help setting it up.

I use Safari and have used Books24x7, I would say in my opinion Safari is better.  I think they have a better book selection, they have videos, also I think it is much easier to read than books 24x7 as it is fit to be similar to actually reading the book.  Example safari has the pages set to that of the actual book, while Books24x7 has a special formatting that they do for the books you want to read.  Safari online also forms better on a tablet for easier reading as well.
5  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Network Pen Testing / Re: vmware pen testing lab help on: November 08, 2010, 04:12:37 PM
You like vyatta then?  I downloaded it the other day but havent had a chance to really look at it.

I will have to say that Virtualbox is great if you are looking to setup a lab.  It is very easy to manage and if you aren't able to have a box connected to the internet, say at work sometimes, Virtualbox is great because you dont need to consistently download GuestAdditions for Virtualbox, which you need to download VMWare tools everytime for VMware player, and in just my opinion VMWare Player is not as good as Virtualbox because it is just not as easy to manage a bunch of systems running at the same time as in Virtualbox, just my opinion......ok I will get off my soapbox now.

Good interview, I liked how it went into his background and story.  I tend to enjoy hearing about peoples backgrounds and such and how they got started alot like where on the Pauldotcom podcasts his guests talk about how they got their start in Information Security and where they are now.

Congrats Trocco!  CEH is a good cert to hold in the DoD world it covers alot of areas in DoD 8570.  Congrats again!  Also CEH is written in the same gibberish language so if you did good with it on Security+ get ready to see it again for the CEH.

Not sure whats going on with it, but I did see that they had the video available yesterday, and then when I got home later that night to download them they were gone.  I am sure it will be back up soon.

xXxKrisxXx thanks for the reply.  I downloaded the Google Python videos (Keepvid.com) and will start checking them out tomorrow.

I also found this as well on youtube for a python programming tutorial:

http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=EA1FEF17E1E5C0DA

Has anyone had any good experience with python programming classes at any colleges?  If I go through a college I have a much easier time getting my work to pay for the classes.

Would anyone happen to know of any Python Courses that are available online?  I am looking to see if there might be any available and out there some where so far I haven't had a lot of luck in my search.  I have been looking over books, but would really like to take a class online to help me out.  Thanks.
11  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Security / Re: The value of GSE on: October 13, 2010, 05:33:30 PM
ziggy no offense taken.  I realized that when I wrote that post maybe it didnt come out the same way as I thought in my head.  I was just saying that I think it is dumb that GCIH qualifies someone at Level III.  If anything it should be at level 2.  GSE should definitely be level 3 it is a very hard time consuming process and costly process to get GSE certified.

It just seems weird to me that according to 8570 GCIH and GSE are held essentially at the same level of expertise if you know what I am saying essentially they are looked at as carrying equal weight, because they both qualify you for the same level for the government.

I was just saying that I thought that was really jacked up that GCIH was level 3 along with GSE since there may be different routes to get a GSE, but all of them require that you have the GCIH certification.
12  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Security / Re: The value of GSE on: October 13, 2010, 01:39:34 PM
This whole conversation got me interested in looking at DoD 8570 as far as the value of the GSE in the government sector.  I had to laugh when I saw the GCIH listed as a certification that will qualify someone for IAT Level III certified according to the government because also listed under the IAT Level III section................GSE.  Who writes these documents cmon the GCIH is held to the same standard at the GSE, do those people have any clue about certifications at all.  If they just looked at the website for three seconds about the GSE they would realize it is not just one test involved in it and that the GCIH is normally included in the track for GSE.....sorry I just needed to rant about our tax dollars at work.
13  Resources / Tools / Re: Security Tools Website on: August 06, 2010, 05:21:38 PM
I apologize if I upset anyone I wasn't trying to do that.  Its just I see alot of people putting small comments on things such as that and it just kind of makes me laugh sometimes because others have no idea of the knowledge or skills of other people, while I have seen some dumb people on posts here say things like how do I hack my girlfriends facebook or something dumb like that and those people are so stupid.

By starting the thread I was just trying to get an idea of some sites people use to track current security tools that they might use.  Like I stated I used to check Security Database Tools Watch consistently, which made it easier for me than checking 20 websites for new security tool releases most of the new releases of things were in one place, Security Database Tools Watch was awesome.

I still follow his twitter feed at twitter.com/toolswatch and I check out http://packetstorm.linuxsecurity.com/ on a consistent basis as well and was just trying to start a good discussion on some possible sites people check out that I have not looked at before.  Thanks everyone once again for the help and the posts.
14  Resources / Tools / Re: Security Tools Website on: August 06, 2010, 09:54:41 AM
@dynamik sectools.org is a good site but alot of there stuff is really outdated.  I was hoping to look for something similar on how Security Database Tools Watch used to be where it would report out when a new update of a tool would be released.

@Equix3n- Thank you I do follow Tools Watch on twitter, once the website stopped being updated he stated that all of the information would be put through the twitter feed.  I do look through the twitter feed, but it can be painful to read through.

@sil Thanks for the help.  I knew comments like this were gonna pop up

"Remember... You should at least *try* to understand how tools work and at one time, try making something similar for yourself. It allows you to understand the process of what the tool does a lot more yielding better (more granular) results."

Thats why I almost didn't post.  I do understand how the tools work I work with them everyday.  I was just simply looking for any websites people would suggest.  I am not trying to be rude to you, but it is comments like that that make people not want to post on this website at all.

I really do appreciate the help from everyone and thanks for the suggestions.
