61  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / ECSA - EC-Council Certified Security Analyst / Re: ECSA/LPT v4 Outline on: October 21, 2009, 03:24:18 AM
I had a look at the course materials options on your link because I was just curious.

As per my "Passed CEH v6" thread I picked up that deal on course materials.
The seal on the box was clearly marked as ECSA/LPT v3. So I ended up getting a v3 box. I can't see how I could of got the v4 stuff without being in europe cause my box came from an ATC.

Box came with a Prometric voucher. Tried to use it via www.2test.com but 2test.com doesn't offer 412-79 and when I tried to book an EC0-479 exam I just kept getting an error page after choosing a date/time.

Logging onto the Prometric Prime website next and trying to book an exam. It clearly states that it is the v4 exam for the ECSA.

Well I think I've answered my own question...

Now to find out the differences....

I haven't done it but I hang around the #offsec chan occassionally. All feedback has been great and I expect no less from muts & co.

I wouldn't expect much on the "methodology" front. That isn't what their courses are designed to teach.

From the order page you provided bill, I notice that there are only two options for purchasing ECSA.

ECSA v3 and a european market only ECSA v4.

Does that mean that v4 is only released for europe?

I don't live in europe. If I book an exam with vue which version will I be tested on?

Nicely done. Now what?

Don

Yep it never ends does it Smiley

Going to change things up a bit. Hoping to sit VCP 410 before the month ends. Been doing a vSphere deployment at work which has been a real challenge.

I've still got CEPT to do going to have to learn a lot about programming before I am ready for that.
Also I've picked up a sweet deal on official ECSA course material. My VMware instructor is also the CEH instructor and he sorted out the complete ECSA box for cost price.

I have seen a trojan which takes screenshots and uploads them whenever someone clicks.

Very bandwidth intensive and very very noticeable...

I was "studying" for a long time, almost a year. However I would say that I only put in like 3 months of actual effort. I had long periods where I wasn't studying at all.

I used InfoSec Institutes online ethical hacking course. I also studied a few chapters from Michael Greg's Exam Prep book. Prior to that I did the OS101 course.

I didn't use any simulations. However Infosec provided with me with their CEH v6 review notes. They were a godsend, easily the best preparation material I had, although I noticed a few errors.

Passed the CEH today.

Had the exam delayed by a week because I decided to take a weekend road trip to Godskitchen rather than study  Grin

Wasn't too challenging although I think I was well prepared for it.

I can confirm the experiences of some of the people on this board of the exam having some supposedly "optional module" questions.

I got some questions on GPS, blackberry and bluetooth etc which totally threw me off. I looked at it and wondered how the heck I was supposed to answer it.

The weirdest question involved terrorists. If you ever get that one you will know what I mean!

Overall feels good to have finally got that out of the way.
68  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / CEH - Certified Ethical Hacker / Re: CEH / InfosecInstitute Review on: September 09, 2009, 05:27:16 PM
Today i received an email from David Renwald that i had passed the CPT. I've got my CEH booked in for october. The delay in taking the CEH is because InfoSec Institute has been kind enough to send me their updated review questions for CEH V6 and I have been perusing this for the moment.

I also got both the Ethical Hacking and Advanced Ethical Hacking courses as a bundle and as per mfrost above the advanced course material beats the first one by a long shot in terms of quality, depth etc.

I know from a lot of feedback from people who have attended the live training for Ethical Hacking, that it is a solid course. It seems their implementation of the online version doesn't match the same quality. However judging from the advanced ethical hacking videos they can do much better, so I hope for future students they update the ethical hacking videos to be of the same quality.
69  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / CEH - Certified Ethical Hacker / Re: Offensive research on EC-Council/ CEH on: August 04, 2009, 06:17:48 AM
The best answer I can give you is that when I did my research on security certs I ended up  doing the OSCP coursework first.

I was not totally convinced in those days that I would be happy with doing CEH.

However I did end up pursuing CEH in the end because it appears to be one of the better known certs and people have heard about it. I'm not saying its well respected but at least people have heard about it in my country (I'm not from USA), unlike most of the other infosec certs around.

If it is such a big organisation I would be inclined to agree with just ignoring the problem.

It's not your issue and you don't have any real rights to push the issue.

If it was a relatively small or medium sized business then you could approach the stakeholders and speak with them without a huge risk on your part but you since you are dealing with a large corp it isn't really worth your trouble.

What sort of retail store is it?

If it is a coffee shop for instance, it might be open on purpose for customer use... It's a bit too vague for me to make a judgement call.

74  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / CEH - Certified Ethical Hacker / Re: Testing This Friday, but.... on: July 10, 2009, 04:50:40 PM
Wow, so looking at study materials, there aren't a lot available for v6.  Just wondering if anyone have any pointers to study for v6.

As previously stated, the objectives/modules covered for v6 are the same as v5.

I am looking to take the test this month. Will I encounter the same issue as Sopwith if I take the test?

His own situation largely mirrors my own. All my course material and study has been in v5.
75  Resources / Career Central / Re: Looking for some advice. on: June 18, 2009, 08:25:48 PM
If you are looking for classes to do Security Software Engineering I recommend advanced exploit and development courses such as InfoSec Institutes Advanced Ethical Hacking course or Offensive Security's Cracking the Perimeter course. Both classes focus on advanced exploit and shellcode development.
I also recommend learning about tools like IDA Pro, Ollydbg, Immunity CANVAS and Metasploit Framework.

However these courses are not beginner courses and you should not take them without a good foundation in skills such as networking, linux use and especially programming.

In terms of system security there is a huge range of courses to choose from and it really depends on what you want to focus on.
