i would lean that if someone can confidently write exploits for metasploit they could port them to C and make binaries that could be run on exploited windows boxes on the inside.

i havent messed with it, but i did read some of the mailing lists posts after your post.

looks like it can be a pain to install and you only get the checks the free versions of nessus has.  i'm gonna wait a bit.

its trying to teach you to document, which is important once you start taking a look at alot hosts and then trying to remember what was open on what and what was vulnerable to what, etc.

Hi All,

I've just signed up for the OffSec101 course starting 13th July. At the moment I'm bouncing around like a kiddy at christmas waiting for it to start Cheesy

Basically I was looking for some advice from those that have already taken (or currently taking) the course with regard to the best way to study the material.

Also from posts I've read here and elsewhere the final exam sounds a bit evil. Any advice on which aspects of the material to learn 100% would also be apreciated.

Thanks in advance, just hoping talking about the course may calm me down some Smiley
RR

just watch the videos, read, and work thru the labs and ask questions after you do some thinking and googling.  I found some of the people (non-offsec people) in the forums and irc to be less than helpful.  kind of annoying.

kev, I agree with you on your point, people need to be able to do something besides install metaspoit on a remote box, etc

ketchup, i disagree that real hackers arent using metasploit.  the whole point of metasploit is to speed up exploit development and expand the usability of exploits by allowing you to choose the payload and run time and you can always write your own exploits for it.  just because all brand new CEH graduates can do is run the gui doesnt make it a bad tool.

yeah but if people dont have the ability to write their own exploits then canvas is the  next cheapest option.

you didnt put a paragraph in there, so can you maybe  reiterate your point?

that we should attempt to use something to hack besides one of the exploit frameworks? how?

your other options would be web and client side, but once you have a login or a shell you are back to network hacking and the problem already mentioned of finding more vulnerable boxes inside the network.

i agree core is loud and noisy, adding a single host and launching A single exploit at a box after you have done some enumeration is far better than the RPT

if you want to do computer security stuff then pick one that is a NSA center of excellence.  all those should be accredited

http://www.nsa.gov/ia/academia/caemap.cfm?MenuID=10.1.1.2

not sure about any online ones but there are some smaller and polys in there.

edit...

take that back, pretty sure norwich (at least their masters online is) but i wasnt too impressed with them.

also keep in mind your learning style too.  if you are someone that needs to have someone teach stuff to you, the online may be difficult.

might need to check the XP firewall as well
45  Resources / Tools / Re: Tenable Updates Plugin Subscription Model for Nessus on: July 10, 2008, 10:38:35 PM
yes its a good supplement, the mosdef stuff is pretty nice from a post exploitation perspective, newer exploits, etc.

documentation is lacking so be for-warned on that one.
