Yeah cause a lot of people are really using it .

[...] i thought maybe only BT is used for pentest, since it's extremely popular .

Personally I think it's a bit of a feedback loop:
  • Backtrack is popular because it's a good package, no getting away from that
  • Because it's popular (and relatively stable) it's used for a lot of training or self-taught from books/articles
  • Because it's used in a lot of training, a lot of people become comfortable/confident with it
  • Lots of people using BT, means it becomes more popular
  • GOTO top

Thanks for your insight i thought maybe only BT is used for pentest, since it's extremely popular .

Hi,

there's many different options to use on a test, for alternative dedicated distros take a look at BlackBuntu or BackBox for example.

Additionally you don't need to use a dedicated pentest distro to perform pentest activities. My main machine is a vanilla Ubuntu (Mint) installation with my preferred tools either installed from repos or compiled from source. Plus I keep a BT VM image handy incase I need to rapidly confirm output from my own system, or access a tool a rarely use.

The main reason for using BackTrack, especially in a training environment is that it ensures that all student system configurations (should) be identical, so effort can be focused on learning the tools and techniques, rather than trying to troubleshoot each student's unique configuration issues.

Ultimately use whatever you feel comfortable, try a few and see what works for you.

Thanks for asking, the FAT issue helped, but i was also missing GRUB also, so i made a proper installation, but it seen even most Distro always reformat during installation to FAT .

Did you fix the issue? If so, what worked for you?

For now i am using Debian to be honest Linux is for Pro i am bleeding my head out cause it's incomplete, Fedora was a bit easier to use  .

Well i said i am new because, i need some insight on other Distro .

Well i am planing of learning pentest but i just keep having problem with Fedora, maybe i can go with Arch Linux or Puppy .

Not knowing how new you are to Linux, I've heard quite a few people recommend Mint for someone coming straight from a Windows background.

An advantage of learning a Debian based distro is that Backtrack is currently Debian (Ubuntu) based.

Well people are saying Arch is for Pro, i am also looking into Puppy .

I had an appliance running Arch a while back. When it came down to it, I wasn't going to switch all of my boxen to it, and it was more aggravation to deal with an odd-man-out distro. Standardization is (usually) your friend.

Hmm it seem a lot of people like Ubuntu, people don't talk much about Arch .

It seem Mint also have Debian Edition also .

I'm a fan of Mint.

Well i am planing of learning pentest but i just keep having problem with Fedora, maybe i can go with Arch Linux or Puppy .

I prefer Ubuntu for normal day to day use personally (although I do also use Fedora), and Backtrack for security tools.

Well i am using Fedora but i am thinking of changing it .

What's your motivation for learning Linux, and why are you thinking of changing Fedora?
