16  Resources / Career Central / Re: Which publisher? on: March 19, 2010, 11:40:46 AM
I know there are a few published authors, maybe it would also help to personally contact some of the other published security authors in the industry.  I can think of a number of them off the top of my head like Richard Bejtlich (Addison-Wesley Professional), Ed Skoudis (Prentice Hall), Dr. Eric Cole (Sams and Wiley), Anton Chuvakin (Wiley and Syngress).  I wouldn't imagine anyone of them wouldn't mind sharing their experience in publishing (if they haven't all ready blogged about it).
17  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / General Certification / Signed up for my GCIA attempt. on: March 19, 2010, 11:30:47 AM
First, I've missed everyone.  Last week I was at SANS2010, doing the work study for SEC505, Securing Windows, then I've also been dealing with some family issues.

Anyway, I finally signed up for my GCIA (GIAC Certified Intrusion Analys) attempt next Wednesday at 12pm.  I have taken the SEC503 in December, re-read the course ware, created a detailed index, read Network Intrusion Detection by Northcutt and Novak and added it to my index.  I've primped and pruned my index within an inch of it's life... any last minute recommendations from the peanut gallery?

Thanks!

I would assume the choice of publisher revolves around what publisher is willing to publish your book.

I think the process is not unlike a movie deal in Hollywood, you need to have a synopsis or a script and then you shop it around to different studios to see which one will bite.

Sweet.  I faciliated 505: Securing Windows.  I wanted to stick around to do the Treasure Hunt, well, heck, to do any of the evening events, but I'm local and did not want to miss out on spending time with my daughter.

25  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Forensics / Re: Need to determine the computer a user account is coming from on: March 05, 2010, 06:39:25 PM
If the scenario is that many different persons use the same user account on a computer, then there should be hardly a possibility to determine which person is at the moment using the account. One solution would be a webcam which is enabled or some sort of spy cam. If you know each person very well you could analyze logs and look for visited websites etc. as you could maybe match it to a certain person.

Wow, those are all good suggestions!  I wish I would have thought about that. Smiley Smiley Smiley Smiley Smiley (I'm just teasing you)

Dust for finger prints, setup a video camera, or more serious suggestions would be to setup a key logger or review web proxy logs to see where the logged on user may have gone.

First off, I think the answer your manager gave you is an asshat managers answer.  A manager should be supportive of an employees desire to certify/educate.

What exactly do you do for your company?  Does the certification directly relate to your job?  If so, it would be an easier sell... but anyway...

I think you might find some great resources from OWASP, http://www.owasp.org.

Good luck!
