1  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / OSCP - Offensive Security Certified Professional / Re: Windows 2008 SP1 - Ways to exploit? on: April 04, 2012, 12:20:40 AM
Damn. I'm in the same rut on the 2008 sp1 box. Guess I've got to try harder!
2  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Network Pen Testing / Re: Mile2 CPTE Review on: January 27, 2012, 04:43:31 PM
I just recently took the CPTE exam. I would say it is on-par with the CEHv6 exam.

I started the CTPE videos as well. Maybe the manual and lab guides would've made it a better experience. But I'd look at other sources for training if I were going to pay out of my own pocket. Mile2 if you're taking notes here: *Update course materials

5  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Network Pen Testing / Re: Enumeration based on IP address range on: October 10, 2011, 12:30:26 AM
So when you say you're using tools like dig or nslookup, are you just not coming up with any info on them from the dns server(s) you're enum or nothing comes up that can pinpoint a particular service that the IP address maybe tied to (ex.. mx record= good chance for smtp to be running)? Depending on the 'nature' of the TOE, you could hit search engines hard, and see if anything has leaked online. Long shot but you never know...  Guess I'm assuming you're trying to get information on the IP's without sending any kind of packets to the ports..? Is this coming from an outside (BH) or inside (WH) approach? Interesting question... Can you give more insight?

Same here... So far pretty good. I agree with SephStorm in that the curriculum is surpassing CEH. I will give a full review as well once I've completed. Who knows, maybe they'll pick me and I can see more of what they have to offer  Grin
8  Resources / Links to cool sites. / Re: Honoring 9-11, Mile2 Offers Free Security Training Videos & Exam on: September 24, 2011, 12:55:58 AM
Yes I'm signed-up. Have been for about a week. Got access to the videos and exam immediately after signing-up on their web site. From what I've seen so far.. Not to bad. It's a nice gesture from Miles2 for sure.
9  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Security / Re: CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner (CASP) on: September 19, 2011, 11:33:40 PM
One complaint is that I wish they'd enforce the experience time like ISC2 does with their application process.  Just taking the test should not be enough.  You should be able to prove that you've been working in security for a set amount of time.  That would make this cert a lot more valuable, while weeding out the riff-raff that are good at memorizing answers (ie: Security+ exam questions all over the internets...).

The application and verifying work history process won't weed out the riff-raff.. But a good practical exam would! The hands-on approach is always best. I have to agree (with probably most here) that multiple choice questions alone (if at all) will not tell you if someone is a good "Security Practitioner" or not..
10  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Forensics / Re: audit computer performance on: September 18, 2011, 11:50:21 PM
For Win OS some of the Sysinternals programs are good for that not to mention other things (ex...Process Explorer). You can use these tools to monitor the system and build your perf baseline.

VW,

I have both the books you've linked us to and I would suggest getting both, plus the other 4 books in that series. It's a 5 volume series.
