1  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Network Pen Testing / Re: Network Perimeter Security (FTP) on: September 15, 2008, 04:08:54 PM
Thank you for the reply - What do you mean by key based SCP? I was thinking about maybe changing the FTP port, but I'm not sure thats the smartest thing to do right now.

FTP Port-
It depends on the role of the FTP servers if you change it to a non standard port, your clients/customers may have a hard time connecting to it. Many corporate firewalls expect FTP to be on port 21 ( to start with Wink ) and your clients/customers may have to work with their network administrators to connect to a non-standard port. So if there is a large number of outside clients/customers that use the FTP servers, changing the port may be more work than it is worth.

I would add that the biggest most important #1 key to a successful presentation of test results is to know who is sitting at the table and what their technical level is. The technical folks may write you off if they think you are trying to impress them with smoke and mirrors and jazzy demos- they want the tech info. If the audience is mostly xIO's then you have to be able to present to their level and they may only have a 'Hollywood' understanding and will gobble up the demos. Sometimes the best thing to do is cover that in the introductions- ask them what their technical level is if you are unsure. I often will split the presentation up and get the Executive level stuff at the front of the presentation, answer their questions and give them the chance to bow out of the meeting before the geek content hits. Often they will try and hang in because I have kept them up to speed. Others will jump at the chance to move on to other issues in their day confident that they understand the results and the appropriate internal staff are getting the info they need to batten down the hatches.

In the vain of having fun.. If you have an extra wireless router, set it up with the same SSID annd whatever security measures he has already defeated  Grin and pop it into place for him to connect to and you can connect to it to play. Apply real security to your 'REAL' accesspoint. If you want him to stay interested plug the 'fake' router into your 'real' router so he can still get to the web but is on a different internal network that your network.

Hmmm I hope that makes sense :p
