Rob,
good work on getting your thoughts and opinions documented online, its certainly a good start to spreading the positive message of security.
I think you article reads reasonably well, however some areas seem sometimes over techy for possibly your intended audience. I dont mean this in a bad way as it is very difficult, but I think you need to define your targeted audience. This might be the computer savvy, who already know (or believe they do) everything about computing, viruses etc, or are you trying to help average Joe, who has a computer at home, and dabbles with the Internet, but doesnt really understand the implications of his actions.
As for getting your message out, well you have made a great start with the blog. If you want to reach more people in perhaps a more physical manner I would suggest speaking to your local library, or maybe if you have a LearnDirect center where you live speak to them. People often go to these places to learn about computers, the Internet and such like.
Hope this helps a little, I am also in the UK, so if you know who your specific audience is let me know and perhaps I can come up with some ways to help you? All the best on your course btw.

This might not be of much help, but when I was building a new Forensic machine in my last company I had heard good things about UltraBlocks devices. I demo'd a UltraBlock (I forget the model), but had some issues with EnCase, so ended up getting an internal Tableau.
I guess my point is, it might be worth seeing if you can get a demo bit of kit to try, as you say they are not cheap so you dont want to make a costly mistake.

It is a tasty bit of kit, but it sure does have a price tag to match, and due to its size I am not to sure how usable it would be in the real world, unless you can type quickly with chop sticks There are so many of these Ultra Mobile Computers sprouting up to compete with the EEE. There is the MSI Wind, new Dell Inspiron Mini, I think HP have one too. Personally, I have recently found the Acer Aspire One, and its been released in the UK in the next couple of weeks and it a bargain price. I have my eye on a blue one come release time. You gotta love gadgets

I also got a sample IronKey a few months ago when we were doing some different reviews on secure media solutions. Personally I think its a good device, I like the way it can store its own secure programs, and also provide a method for surfing in a secure manner with what they call the "Secure Sessions Service". The most important bit, they look swish too Seriously though, as said, it does what it says on the tin, great for personal and enterprise usage. Like most things in the IT and Security marketplace, everyone is doing everything. So if your accident prown, and often fall over in puddles, the IronKey is the one for you.

They made the record, and I believe there were a huge amount of downloads. However there was no previous record, so in theory if there were only 3 downloads it would have been a record.
I have downloaded it on my machines, pitty some of my old addons are not compatible.

The course starts in September, so I am going to meet with some of the tutors, and talk more about my ideas, so I will update more as I go.
Also dont be alarmed if I ask for some suggestions. I think it will be quite a challenge, as some of these people will have little IT experiance, so delivery and detail will be critical. My main aim is to be informative, and have the students have a great time.
We all know there is nothing worse than a boring lecture, or course.

Just watched the car dealer one, this is like a dream job. Dont know of many UK companies demanding this sort of work, seems a shame though, would love an opportunity like that. Perhaps I need to set something up myself

Update : For those of you who listened to Don's recent podcast, you will know he speaks about knowing and using your "Super Power". Well mine is abit like Dons, I ask people for stuff, and due to my nature of getting on with everyone, and being a likable guy, they usually do it. So I called up my college where I used to around 12 years ago, told them what I have been doing since I left, what I am about, what I have to offer. They were very impressed, and couldnt believe the timing of my communication with them. They are launching a new HND (For those outside the UK, this is like a low level degree, that you can then do an additional top up to make it a full degree) course in Networking, that features some security topics. Well they have asked if I would come and give some talks, and perhaps set some assignments and perhaps give some lessons. This is just great, now I just need to work out how I can fit it around my work as some of it will be a few hours during the working day. I am really looking forward to the challenge, and helping future wanna be IT bods. So to conclude, if you have been sat about thinking about doing something similiar, have faith in yourself and give it a go, you never know someone just might say YES.

Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Other / Security Events in the UK??

Don, apologies if this is in the wrong place, please feel free to move.
Guys,
there are lots of events in Europe and in the US, like ChicagoCon, BlackHat, ShmooCon, and more.
However due to work commitments, and financial constraints it might not always be practical or possible to attend such events.
So do any of you guys know of any decent UK based Security Events? Of course there is the yearly InfoSec, but in my opinion this has diminished in quality lately, and its basicly just a big sellers market.
I am looking for events to gain more knowledge, meet like minded people and network.
Thanks again in advance guys.

Hiya Guys, as you can see I dont post to much, but I do look on lots of forums and do lots of readings, and I really should contribute more, and I will. This leads me onto my question. I am in the UK, but I dont think its really matters for this question. Now I dont claim to be some Ubber Guru or anything, but I have been working in Networking and Security for a fair few years now, so I must know something, right? Anyway I would really like to give something back, and help to develop the professionals of the future. So I am thinking perhaps I can add some value by doing some teaching / lecturing at local college or university to give the students some of my experiance and expertise, and possibly help focus their direction. I wonder if any of your guys have done something similar, and if so how you went about getting your foot in the door. I am thinking about contacting my old lectures (if they are still there as it was about 11 years ago I was there) and asking them if I could add some value to the lessons. I am not particularly looking to make some money, I just feel I could help out others, give some real world scenarios, learn from the students, and perhaps put myself under some pressure with the questions they might pose. So any hints and tips would be appreciated. Thanks in advance guys.
