Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Certification / CCNA valuable for IT Securty industry?
|
on: May 10, 2007, 01:05:06 PM

I'm writing my Network+ exam this weekend, then I'll have: A+, Security+, Network+, and GCIH. I don't know what to do next. I was leaning towards the CCNA but not sure if there's a more valuable one I should be doing next to get into the IT Security industry? I'm not in a security job now, just tech support trying to get into the industry. What are your suggestions? CCNA, CEH, GSEC (even though I already have GCIH?) or a vendor cert such as Checkpoint? I have no checkpoint firewalls or any other hardware that I can get hands-on experience with though. Thanks!

Just had a look at Hacker Halted's website. This conference looks very promising. All these great conferences I'm learning about from this website. It's just horrible that all are outside of Canada. I'd also love to represent EH-Net if the opportunity ever presents itself... like what Slimjim has done for you, Don.

Looks like a great read! I just finished reading Echelon which kinda pulled me in just as this is doing to me now.. Just sucks that my library doesn't have Daemon.

Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Certification / Re: SANS GCIA

Going back and reading my posts on this thread, I had to laugh! I accidently had this aimed at the GCIA, but in fact it was the GCIH that I was writing and meaning to ask about. I ended up with a near perfect score on both exams and now on the advisory board for SANS. It was a great feeling to do so well with a SANS cert like this. Thanks guys!

Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / GCIH - GIAC Certified Incident Handler / Re: My GCIH review

I wrote and passed my GCIH in December, but I also Volunteered at one of the conferences and participated in the conference for free. When I arrived back home, I studied for a while (don't remember how long), then wrote the practice exams. These exams were very helpful for me. I love having practice exams. They either give ya a wake-up call by slapping you in your face or they tell you to go ahead already and write the real one. Scored in the 90's % for each exam and I'm now on the review board.

Resources / Career Central / Re: CCNA or CEH?

Listening to many people who've failed the CCNA so many times is getting me very worried! I'm going to get my Network+ before I even attempt the CCNA now. I don't want to keep shelling out $$$ and failing it. I am also a LOT more interested in the CEH then the CCNA too. Eventually I'll get the CCNA, just not sure when. Thanks for all the replies.

Resources / Career Central / CCNA or CEH?

Hey Guys,
I'm wondering what to get for my next cert. I'm ultimately wanting a job in network security/pen-testing, but it looks like I may need to get a network admin type job first. I see that most people who go for their CCNA already have a year or more of hands-on work experience with the routers. I don't have any experience with Cisco at all. I have my college diploma in Networking and that's about it.
As for the CCNA study materials, I have the following:
- Boson NetSim - CCNA TestOut - Sybex CCNA Study Guide - 5th ed - Sybex CCNA Fast Pass - A couple CiscoPress books
Would it be reasonable to study on my own for this cert or should I wait until I (hopefully) get a networking job, then go for the CCNA later? If so, I'd probably start on my CEH now.
Thanks!
