a) some NICs are self switching which would mean using a straight through.

These 'auto sensing' things arewhat I was talking about here  Wink

Maybe for wired connections you could set up a switch connected to a restricted access vlan, then you could attach a wireless access point configured, as others have suggested, to provide a separate wireless network to this switch. That should be nice and secure.

other things that could possibly stop a crossover working are:

a) some NICs are self switching which would mean using a straight through.

or b) the cable could be knackered...

I really think that the A+ has changed a lot compared to what it used to be.

Fair enough  Smiley. It's been a few years since I saw the material and it was very basic at that point. Thinking about it that was nearly 10 years ago so no surprise that it's been updated really Tongue

I found the same thing with a port scanning tool I was using. Some AV apps have a way of approving things so you don't get harangued. Others are really annoying and just delete stuff....

Another bump... Tongue

Maybe it would be useful to have some banners for the site that could be embedded elsewhere. Just a lump of HTML that I could graft onto my blog to show a link? I have a link to here anyhow, but a banner would be more eye-catching.

I am going to go for the A+ cert before the new year just to get a little bit of a start and try to get in somewhere (anywhere!) to start working in the IT field asap

If you're looking at getting some industry certs to start of with I would suggest going for one of the MS ones first rather than a CompTIA cert. In my experience they're cheaper, more interesting (less basic) and are worth more as far as employers are concerned. By all means go for one later on, maybe the Security+, Network+ or Linux+. A+ is very basic hardware/software maintenance, the sort of skills you tend to pick up after a couple of PC builds, whereas the MS certs demonstrate a high level of proficiency with (unfortunate but true) the dominant industry OSs.

As someone else suggested, I would definitely look at setting up some sort of lab to play around in also. VMWare is very useful for this if you don't want a load of old PCs lying around.

Hasn't some sort of legislation been brought in since this happened specifying a minimum level of security for companies storing financial details? I'm sure I heard talk of that sort of thing. Still won't stop security breaches through general ineptitude, but should make things a little better.

Damn those hackers!

And of course these businesses are in no way blamable for this having left their customers confidential details floating around on insecure networks...

I can't quite decide whether this is a serious post/request or someone being sarcastic..?

Why do I have a horrible feeling that it's the former  Undecided

It's just yet another pointless 'security measure' for people to suffer through.  It's bad enough having to take half your clothes off (ok, I'm exaggerating, but taking your shoes, belt, glasses, etc. off when already juggling hand luggage is a pain) and pull your hand luggage to pieces, but now you have the worry of this sort of thing happening when you reach the other end. I've not seen a single one of these security measures do anything but annoy people. They're not going to stop a clever and determined terrorist doing what they want.

We have politicians making speeches about not letting "the threat of terrorism" interfere with our lives, then they go and pass measures like these... Mad.

Gah! Why are all the decent cons in the US!!  Angry bah and more gah!

Sorry, rant over...

Have fun those that are going.

I'd not heard of this so thanks for posting. I'll have to give these a go.

Something to do with the time I have on my hands before I start back at uni anyway...  Grin

Hi,

Check out the info I've left in your other post

Hi,

I run backtrack from a usb stick. Here's 3 of the folder full of text files I also have on the key for command references. They're all things I've pulled from various forums and saved for later use.

Hope it helps.
