im not sure if this will help at all, but overall if you want to learn and excell in the security field, then i think 2 things you need to be very familiar with is , linux, all aspects of networking like tcp, udp, and so on. learn the OSI model and what happens at what layer, its not the most exciting stuff, but it is stuff you need to know. With google you should be able to find all the information you need, and then just start being creative and having fun.

hope this helps a little.

3  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Network Pen Testing / what do you prefer??? on: June 10, 2008, 02:39:34 PM
im just curious as to what people prefer to use; command line or GUI
i know some programs olny offer 1 user interface, but with programs like nmap  which offers both, what would you rather use? i would take a command prompt over a gui anyday of the week.

i am looking forward to seeing the slides as well. this seems like a tough field to break into. everywhere i look they want experience, how am i supposed to get experience if no one gives me a shot. Thats ok, sooner or later i will get my chance. i start school again today, all my security classes, so im hoping to make some good connections there.

i think the olny argument you can make for the criminal, is if there were none of them, would this site even exsist??

i hope nobody takes that in the wrong way, i do not support any sort of criminal activity.

10  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Programming / Re: In Need of Some Advice... on: June 07, 2008, 09:05:14 PM
hey Kris, i am currently in a network design and security program at clark university, its a great program, the whole thing is hands on with a ton of labs. i was never really good at listening to teachers lecture for 8 hours a day. I need to do it to really learn and understand it. If thats the way you are i highly recommend a tech program to meet your needs. I think clark sold some of there campus to A.I.C. but the program remains the same, you even get linux configuration and administion classes, as well as the classes for security+, and MCSA,MCSE, linux+ and a handfull of others. I think in this field, the certs are more important then the degrees, i could be totally wrong on that though and im sure getting both doesnt hurt you at all.

Good luck

11  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Network Pen Testing / Is this legal???? on: June 07, 2008, 05:36:03 PM
i wanted to start testing my knowladge and what i have learned so far. I have a lab set up consisting of a 2003 server, a couple of os's in vmware and a xp and linux box. i wanted to test even further, so i loaded small business server 2003 on a machine. i am going to set this machine up at my buddys house and go to work from my house. He connects to the internet through a comcast modem, which i will be scanning. Since i have permission i assume everything is fine. Is this something i should notify comcast about beforehand, or should he Huh

Thanks

13  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Other / freeBSD questions on: June 06, 2008, 03:59:53 PM
I was looking around on the freeBSD website. Has anyone had any experience with it, good or bad. I was going to install it in vmware, if thats possiable, or run a live cd. is it even worth looking at? would it benefit me in the security field knowing this OS? sorry about all the questions in the post. Can it be customized the way linux can?

Thanks in advance
