1  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Network Pen Testing / Re: Ethics of government sponsored hacking on: May 19, 2008, 10:01:18 AM
It is my understanding that a 'ethical' hacker is an individual hired by a company or other individual with written permission to proform pentest on said company or individuals systems. That being said - how is it ethical to hack an individuals systems without permission? Just because the government gives permission does not mean it right. Then again this is my opinion on the subject. I guess think of it on a smaller scale. If the government says "go steal <object> from Wal-mart" does that make it legal? Yes (in a way - no legal recourse atleast) Does it make it ethical? No. The company in question would lose revenue for the object taken. Call me crazy but im a solid 'no' for ethical and border-line illegal in my opinion.

Bogwitch,

Thank you very very much! Not only did you tell me how it is done but (imo) the more important why it is done. Once i get back home I will run them and try to keep the 'newbie' questions to a min.

Does anyone happen to have a suggestion or requierments to look for in wireless cards for sniffing? (chipset freq etc)

Thank you,
Mike

I downloaded the .tgz files and dont know how to use them. I will do a google on them and see what I turn up. Btw my goal is to no longer be a pampered Windows type. The readme for some of the sites says use ./configure /make /make install (reciting from memory I will edit after a google if they are wrong) Should I target the directory and try the commands?

Thank you,
Mike

Hello all, so I am happy to say I am fully running Linux for the first time - though it was on the top of my 'to do' list. I chose to go with Ubuntu 8.04 which was released this morning. Being so new to Linux I am sooo lost on how to do anything. I am trying to install the tools described to me in my reading (kismet, airsnort, cowpatty, asleap, and wireshark) and I am extremely confused on how to 'execute' the downloads. I seem to bee extremely pampered in the Windows 'double click install' method and am in need of some reteaching. Can anyone give me some newbie Linux pointers or point me to a good site that can?

On a similar/unrelated subject can anyone suggest to me a good USB/PCMCIA-E wireless for sniffing/injecting packets?

Actually... Haha just kidding - though having been a Windows guy for so long im actually not sure exacly what the "man" command has to do with Linux. Im actually here for a little help with Linux commands (I know almost none - except "rm -rf /" incase i want to mess everything up Smiley ) Im also needing to find a decent wireless for my Laptop to do sniffing/injection. Was going to ask if anyone had suggestions on beginner Linux/Perl/CEH guides (books/ebooks/etc) I did notice the CEH section here as well... But I am less concerned with the cert as I am the implementation. A computer cert is only as good as the person using it - anyone can memorize questions and answers but it takes skill to put the knowledge to use. And I would rather not be on my first job after getting my cert and wipe a server...

Hello, I just wanted to come out of "lurker" status and introduce myself to the community. I feel its rude to lurk for a while then demand help without intoduction. I stumbled (Googled) across the EH network last week and did some reading and liked what I saw Smiley. I am a complete CEH newbie and have come to learn and if I can - share what I know on other subjects. I have alot of questions but those will be left to another thread, another day - after some searching. Have a great day!
