151  EH-Net / News Items and General Discussion About EH-Net / NWCCC on: April 25, 2006, 04:38:10 PM
Wow. Had a phone interview this morning for a Security Analyst position with a few guys from the National White Collar Crime Center http://www.nw3c.org.

First off, they told me they never make a  decision off a phone interview. I expected that. But they told me because they are funded through grant  money from the FBI that they cannot help me relocate financially. They can, however give me suggestions on where to find an apartment in the area. I'm located in eastern suburbs of Cleveland Oh, and they are in Glen Allen, VA. Mappoint says it is about 491 miles and a 7 1/2hour drive. Yike! They left me from the interview saying they would see about getting me in for a face-to-face interview, they didn't know when. They would have to make me a really good offer, but it has yet to come to that point. They were real hot about me filling out their application, though, which I already did and faxed back to them already. We'll see what happens.  Huh

Yeah, I hear ya. I've been drooling over the F.R.E.D., which is a complete forensic desktop optimised for forensics, natcherly. It inlcudes dual core CPUs, about 2GB of RAM, an option for a RAID, and comes with a flat-screen monitor. Only 6 grand. Ouch! They also have a version in a laptop, only 4 grand. cool stuff.

Sounds like a plan. I had a customer of mine GIVE me her old Thinkpad I series. It's an I1200/I1300, came with external USB floppy and all manuals. She was having trouble with it booting. I went and bought her a new Sony Vaio notebook with XP Home, and showed her how to use it. Most amazingly, it went through on MY credit card. She reimbursed me for the cost of it, PLUS $400.00 for myself on it. Turns out the only problem with it [the Sthinkpad] was the power supply. I wnet and bought a replacement power supply, and it works great. Until recently, it didn't make any noise, and I couldn't figure out why. In Device manager, all audio hardware was running fine. I went through the manual, and discovered the FN key and page down, which turns sound on/off. Now it makes sound like it's supposed to! Yay!  Grin

I had ANOTHER customer of mine GIVE me her old Dell Inspiron 1000 notebook; it had a problem with the keyboard. The keyboard kept inserting random characters into online text boxes, and the keyboard made noise. Took it out, and shot some air in it. Nothing. I went and bought a replacement keyboard on eBay. They guy I bought it from shipped it to me in a big bubble envelope, so it arrived all bent out of shape, and in worse condition than the original one. I emailed the guy about it, he told me he would try to find me another one. He couldn't. He refunded my money and told me to keep it.
So I kept playing with the oroginal keyboard that came installed. Took it out again, and shot some more air into it. It works Great! I now use it as my main machine. It's only a Celeron, but it's faster than my Dell desktop which is 8 years old and only a Pentium II at 333Mhz. I now do 99% of my online time on this Inspiron, from my bed. I run a Cat5e from my Netgear Firewall connected to the PII, in the spare bedroom, and do all my internet from my bed. It's easier, too; I had abdominal surgery last Nov. I get around fine, now.   Grin

There should't be any difference, other than that with a laptop, you can get some hands-on exp. trying to crack the WEP at the local Starbuck's.  Grin  Harder to do that using a desktop.

Starbuck's in my area use T-mobile, which wants something like $0.10 a minute or something. So I just go to the local Phoenix coffee shop, which is closer to me than Starbucks, where they have FREE Wifi.

Oh, okay. It still looks pretty cool, though. They may call me to try and nail down the sale, that was part of the registration, as I'm sure you saw, but until I get some cashflow, they're going to have to sit at the end of a long line.

Condor's(Kevin Mitnick's) girlfriend "Suzy Thunder" was reported to spread the story that Condor could launch a nuclear attack by whistling into a telephone. Condor did about 10 yrs in prison, 8 yrs in Solitary. When he was released in 2001, he was prohibited from using any kind of technology other than a "Landline telephone" (No cells).
THAT's smart, isn't it?

Of course, Condor couldn't reeeaallly launch a nuclear attack. Ma Bell would probably have something to do with it.

Man, that does look neat. i don't have the $$$ for it either, but I ordered the demo, too.
Kinda looks like it takes all the fun out of doing it yourself.  Grin
Probably saves a lot of time, though.  Cheesy
Guess I'll have to be happy with my copy of Helix and Auditor that I burned. There's always something new to drool over. Where'd I heave that towel at?  Grin

Here is a keylogger KILLER I found. You'll have to join this board to be able to download it, but joining it is free....

I don't have any kids, but IMHO, I would think YES, it IS ethical for parents to use a keylogger on their children, if they knew how. What with what is going on nowadays, with the predators and all, i would think most parents would love to use a keylogger, like I said, IF they knew they were out there and knew what a keylogger is and does. Being able to monitor kids, especially at sites like www.myspace.com, would be invaluable, and a great help to law enforcement officials, if they should become involved. A keylogger should be on the list of wedding presents when a couple gets married. Next wedding I get invited to (and I haven't been to a wedding in years), I'll give 'em a keylogger.

Just my $0.02.

There is even a section on this in my CEH manuals, although what is listed there is no where near as comprehensive and thorough as what is listed here.
Good to know! Thanks, Don!

161  EH-Net / News Items and General Discussion About EH-Net / Re: Recent Downtime on: April 09, 2006, 09:29:56 AM
I imagine they would monitor it for them 24x7, but that would depend on the package Don purchased. I ran the domain by www.dnsreport.com Friday night when I was having trouble getting on, and I see he's using 1and1.com for his hosting. This the company that runs 4 or 5 page ads in magazines like eWeek. I looked into using them one time, but it seems they outsource their ISP duties to a German company, so I decided not to use them. It's a pain when you need them to do somethng, and they talk to you with the thick accent. I even have problems watching the new Dr. Who because of the thick British accent.
Oh well, if it doesn't bother Don, I guess it's OK. It's just me, I suppose.
162  EH-Net / News Items and General Discussion About EH-Net / Re: Recent Downtime on: April 08, 2006, 06:28:07 PM
That's what I figured; I was having a hard time trying to connect last night to answer Dengar's posts, and all I was getting was server timeouts. Argh, I was  starting to have withdrawl pains. So in the meantime, I ran ad-aware on my machine (which I realized I hadn't done in a long time) and I ran a virus-scan, which I also hadn't done in a long time. The virus scan detected my install of Cain and Abel, and removed it. Argh. Oh well, I can always re-install it later if I have to, if I need it.

In the future, can you try and schedule down-time during the night, when we usually sleep? For those of us that sleep, that is. Roll Eyes

I'm all for this growing thing. Growing pains, yeah. I'm here for the long run, too.
 Cool

Thanks, Don.
163  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Network Pen Testing / Re: Ethereal Packet Capturing on: April 05, 2006, 07:02:33 PM
You also need to make sure you have the WinPCap packet capture library instsalled, or Ethereal will be severely crippled, and may not run at all. It is a free download, and I believe it is included when you download Ethereal, but you will still need to install it manually.
164  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / CEH - Certified Ethical Hacker / Re: Ethical Hacking exam on: April 04, 2006, 02:33:02 PM
Sounds good to me. I did the CEH class back in June 04, so I have the official course material, pre-May 05 "Ver.4", if there is any differance. I doubt many students would have the courseware, unless they purchase the books off the EC council website. Makes the most sense to me, start up 23 (approx.) different threads based on the different "modules" in the courseware. I could post "starter" threads in each to get the students going.

Could not probably in good conscience recommend any study guides or books outside the courseware that I did not already have exposure to. I didnotice that the actual test covered something that was not covered in my class, namely, URL Deobfuscation. COuld do a thread just based on that; seeing as how it was not in my class but WAS on the exam I did, I would think that would be pretty important.
