3947  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Malware / Microsoft Releases WMF Fix Early on: January 05, 2006, 03:24:19 PM
Microsoft Security Bulletin Advance Notification
Directly from Microsoft:

Microsoft will release the update today on Thursday, January 5, 2006, earlier than planned.

Microsoft originally planned to release the update on Tuesday, January 10, 2006 as part of its regular monthly release of security bulletins, once testing for quality and application compatibility was complete. However, testing has been completed earlier than anticipated and the update is ready for release.

In addition, Microsoft is releasing the update early in response to strong customer sentiment that the release should be made available as soon as possible.

Microsoft’s monitoring of attack data continues to indicate that the attacks are limited and are being mitigated both by Microsoft’s efforts to shut down malicious Web sites and with up-to-date signatures form anti-virus companies.

The security update will be available at 2:00 pm PT as MS06-001.

3948  Resources / Links to cool sites. / Re: Hacker Highschool on: January 04, 2006, 05:11:55 PM
I appreciate the participation, but I think we've gotten off topic. Hacker High is a non-profit org for teens. CEH is a certification not related at all to Hacker Highschool. It seems as though we have gotten away from talking about either Hacker Highschool or the idea of teaching security to young students.

It might be better suited for the CEH or the General Hacking Boards.

Thanks for understanding,
Don
3949  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Malware / Windows Live Safety Center (Beta) on: January 04, 2006, 04:08:23 PM
We've all probably have heard by now that Microsoft is launching numerous products under the name Live. Their latest offering is a suite of security and performance scans. This site is also recommended by MS for the latest WMF flaw. I'm curious to see feedback on this.

From the main page:

3954  Resources / Tutorials / VMware Player Hack on: January 01, 2006, 07:42:38 PM
Quoted from the tutorial site:

VMware Workstation has always been (and still is) a commercial product, and you have to pay a fairly large sum to get your hands on it, but VMware have now released a free application dubbed “VMware Player”, which can run virtual machines produced by VMware and a few other companies. Yet, with some simple hacks, we can use VMware Player to run any x86 Operating System we like.

3955  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / Network Pen Testing / Re: Hacking with Live Linux Distros on: January 01, 2006, 06:22:13 PM
All you do is insert the CD of the live Linux distro of your choice, and then boot to that CD.

If you want to play with Linux or use some of its features without having to lose your Windows installation, then it is a great choice. Especially if you just want to play with Linux to learn. As for it being an alternative to a full install of a Linux distro, that's up to you. Clearly a full install will perform better.

I am a big fan of virtualization, although VirtualPC at the moment does not support Linux. So either wait for the next update or use VMWare Workstation today (http://www.vmware.com/).

Good luck,
Don
